Nvidia users try 2xQAA

I have been trying to find a balance with my video settings. While I was trying different stuff I found a setting 2xQ for Antialiasing. And it made BF2 look so much better and barely took away any performance. You can not turn this on in the BF2 video options. You must go to your driver panel and turn it on manually. Im not sure if this was already a widely know thing but just figured I would post about it in case some people did not know. I tried both 2xAA and 4xAA, and 2xQAA looks just as good as 4xAA and it even seems to be easier on your gpu then the normal 2xAA. Its great now their are no more jaggies all over my damn screen.


Im not sure what nvidia cards support it but mine is a evga 6800 128mb. You can find it in your driver panel under performance & quality settings. Then just click on Antialising settings and uncheck the box below that says application controlled. You can right click on Anialising settings and it will give you some info about all the different AA settings. But if you do change it in your driver panel it will apply for everyting not just for BF2.

Sorry if the post was a little confusing. I'm not the best a explaining things. If you do try it reply back and tell me if it worked for you.

I used to use 2xQ but I found it made things TOO blurry...

My LCD native rsolution is 1280x1024 and I was at first running the 2xQ at 800x600 and yes this was to blurry. So I turned my resolution up to 1024x768 and I barely noticed any frame rate dropped and it made it a lot less blurry.

I can't remember..do you have to turn AA off in-game to prevent problems with forcing AA outside of the game?

I don't want to have to re-optimize my shaders again just to play around with this.

Im pretty sure it will just overide whatever you have your in game bf2 setting at.

If you have a 7800 *** the supersampling option NOT off or MULTISAMPLING option on 4x AA or 8 x AA makes a huge difference. Chain link fence and grass are crystal clear. But you have to go set it. Made a huge diff in HL2 as well. Made Far Cry upset my PC.

I'd take some screens but I'm far to lazy :}

i've tried to manually set mine like you do, 8s aa and supersampling and all that and it doesn't make a difference in bf2. any ideas?

This explains why exactly what you said is true.......

"It is important to note that on Nvidia graphics cards, any Antialiasing modes ending in 'Q' stand for Quincunx Antialiasing - a form of Antialiasing which provides a higher level of visual quality for a lower level of performance loss. For example, the 2xQ (Quincunx) mode offers similar visual improvements to 4x Antialiasing, with a performance level similar to that of 2x Antialiasing. Any Antialiasing modes ending in 'S' provides greater sub-pixel coverage, meaning the quality of Antialiasing provided is better, however performance may be lower. For example, 4xS Antialiasing looks better than 4x Antialiasing, but also performs slightly worse. Note that any 'S' mode Antialiasing setting only works in Direct3D games. Finally, any 'G' mode (Gaussian) Antialiasing mode provides better image quality than the equivalent standard Antialiasing sample rate, but at a lower performance level. The Transparency Antialiasing and Gamma Correct Antialiasing descriptions are found further below and only work on the 7800 series cards."

I still use a crt. Im not sold on lcd's yet. I can run at top res, with aa and anisotropic running without a prob. AMD 3500+ a WD/raptor 2gs ram BFG 6800gt oc/ oced even more. Pretty simple stuff, but it works gr8.

nvidia control panal make sure your on GLOBAL SETTINGS

I set 8xs AA {make sure application control isn't checked}
16x Anisotropric {make sure application control isn't checked}
image setting HIGH QUALITY {IMPORTANT}
v sync off
force mip maps off
conformant texture clamp ON
extension limit OFF
EVERYTHING off till
Gamma correct antiasing ON
Transparency antialiasing SUPERSAMPLING
finally LOD CLAMP ALLOW
