Where do you learn all this stuff?

There is too much to learn in this game and I'd like to know where the documentation is...does it even exist other than in forums, etc...

Seriously, what exactly are you looking for? Tactics? Descriptions of weapons and vehicles? Changing setting? Reward info?

Don't worry about the icons and such, most of them are useless. the stripes mean ranked server, and that's really the only one you need to know .

As far as tactics wise, don't make yourself and easy target. Just because there is a road, that doesn't mean walk down it. Nothing is more easy to pick off than a guy in the middle of the road with no cover. If you are taking a point, and you know the enemy commander is a good one, as soon as you nuetralize it, run like heck. After about 30 seconds, if artillery has not rained down on the nuetral point, it is only somewhat safe to venture back in. Join a squad, and stick with the squad. Watch what they do, and follow...just make sure it's a good squad.

The learning curve is pretty steep in BF2. That is, there are many little things to know that could make your life easier (or your foes life worse) but as raceacontari stated, the best thing to do is to join a 3 or 4 men squad and follow them, offering you help when you can either as a medic or supply guys. They will appreciate it and by just watching them play you will learn. And if the squad is only a squad in name and not facts (ie it's squattered all across the map not acting as a squad) change squad.

Here's a noob question (I just got the game yesterday). Can you only get stats in ranked servers? Or is there stat lag(have to wait 12 hours for stats to appear) like it says in the sticky thread above? Sorry if this is in the wrong topic but I didn't see anyone posting in that topic.

A mate of mine has been playing BF2 for about six months. It was only last month did he found out that he could hold down the mouse button and keep the sights up for the anti-tank.
Wot makes it more funny, is that was very good with the Anti-tank before.

If you want to learn by reading, instead of playing, then http://wiki.bf2s.com is a great place to start. They've got guides for everything, from team points and scoring to tactics with different classes and vehicles. They've also got good weapon stats.

Another good link is http://www.secretsofbattlefield.com/hitpoints.php, this is a page that lists some vehicles, and how much damage a rocket does depending on where you hit. Great page if you like the Anti-Tank role!!

As for myself, I enjoy jumping right in the action and finding stuff out as I play. If you decide to go down that road, do as others have said and join a squad. In a squad you can spawn on your squadleader (as long as he's alive and not in a full vehicle). Good squad leaders find a nice hiding place near a flag, and let his squad spawn on him so they can take the flag.

When joining a squad, all the squad members will be marked green, instead of blue, on the mini-map. Always have a look at where the green dots are before you decide to spawn; if they're scattered across the map, then leave the squad and find another. If they're all in the same area, chances are you've found a good squad (which unfortunately isn't too common).

Stick with your squad at all times, and follow your squadleaders orders - they are marked with arrows/lines on your mini-map. Watch them play, and learn from them. A good class to start with is the Medic, since you'll be a valuable asset to your squad - and you can heal yourself if you get hit. Make sure to drop medikits when your squadmates are low on health, and revive them when they die. If you've got a good squad leader, who stays in safety behind his squad, you don't have to be TOO afraid of dying - as you can simply spawn on your leader again 15 seconds later :)

I've got only one more thing to say.. If you want to try flying a jet or a helicopter, do it offline! Start a single player game and practice there until you feel comfortable and can stay in the air for a prolonged time. Jumping into a chopper on a public server and crashing it 10 seconds later, killing 5 teammates is the best way to make your teammates hate you - SO PRACTICE FLYING OFFLINE.
