What type of speakers do you use? I'm thinking of upgrading from my Logitech Z-640's to a set of Z-5500 digital speakers. Will it make a big difference in the sound of games and music?? Do High quality headphones give a better gaming experience than high quality speakers??
i have the z-640 too, but i usually just use headphones.
reason being 1)you get a better sense of surrounding, you can hear things on your left and right better with headphones 2)my parents bitch when its too loud :|:
headphones are far better for gaming than most speaker sets. I'm going to get some sennheiser HD555s - Once you hear sound through headphones like those you don't want to go back :P
I just recently got the Logitech Z-5300e speakers... didn't have much money to spend and I got them for pretty cheap. Personally, I like speakers better than headphones just because I feel like my ear drums won't blow up as much if the sound isn't blasting right into my ears. I'm not too fond of being tied down by the cord either. I'm sure that it would sound a lot better if I got a really expensive set of speakers or headphones, but for the price that I paid the 5300e's sound a lot better than the $15 headset that I had lying around.
I use an Audigy2 ZS Platinum sound card and Logitech Z5500 speakers. Not doubt they are absolutely the most awesome combo for sound. I use the Toslink, optical< setting for music and the analog for games. This is neccesary, because, games dont decode digital. You get a really cool remote with the speakers, as well as one for the soundcard, front panel system. If you tweak it right, there is no other combo out there to compare. However, if you have a really high quality headset, the experience is probably a little better. It feels more like you are right in the middle of the action. The surround sound effect is pretty spectacular. Either way, if you have this kind of hardware, you will be happy with either choice. Just remember, analog for games and digital for music.
I've had the Z-5500 speakers for about 4 months now, I'm very happy with them, the only thing that surpised me at first was the sheer size of the sub woofer, it's huge!!. Mind you the bass reproduction is amazing. I only really use the speakers in the early evening though, later on I put on a Medusa 5.1 Headset and power down the z-5500 as it's liable to keep the neighbourhood awake.
Having said the above and loving the speakers I think there are certain advantages to headsets, makes you more aware of ambient noise in the game so you're more likely to be aware of someone nearby trying to sneak up on you or some potential target you could sneak up on you would have otherwise missed.
Yeah, thats kind of what I was refering to. You seem to be more "IN" the game using good quality headphones. Have you tried the toslink conex with music yet?
I have 4.1 cambridge's that I use when I'm at home by myself (not very darn often). Otherwise, it's headphones (so I don't disturb the wifeys' Reba re-runs). I have a set of Zalman 5.1 headphones (yes, that's what I said) that do a remarkable job at directional sound reproduction. Nothing like being able to hear exactly where that wounded BH is hiding from my little .50 caliber buddy.
The caveat is that although they say (right on the *&^% box) that they are 5.1, they are actually 5.0. The base wire is CUT for some reason, so the weapons don't give some of their distinctive BOOMS and CLACK-CLACK-CLACK that I hear on my 4.1's. On the other hand, I have spent a number of hours with them on, and I don't have any awful ringing sound that I would probably have if the base were jumping-thumping-pumping in my ears.

Same with the Z-5300e sub... I think it's something like 12.5"x14"x12.5". I had to go out and buy a new desk cause I just didnt have any room to put it under my old one lol. Gets a nice big puff of air coming out of the thing when you fire the M24; adds a whole other element to the game. I have to turn the speakers down whenever I get in an Abrams cause the walls start to shake if I don't.
