Yes thats a major aspect of it. Being able to differenciate between enemy and friendly around the corner or behind the fence by their language.

I don't, I think immersion is an integral part of keeping people playing the game long after release.

When you play as MEC or China, whenever you use voice commands, commander says something, etc, its in arabic/chinese. Does anybody else, like me think this is pointless? I actually read somewhere that dice actually struggled to find someone to speak in arabic for them .. :/
When you are in the game, you don't want to hear a load of stuff you dont understand, and its as simple as that. How many people are there that are players of BF2 and can understand Arabic/Chinese?? My bet is not a lot.
Like I said, I think its a really stupid idea. I dont want to have to look around my screen to see what teamates are telling me, I can normally simply hear them.
TBH, I wouldn't mind if the makers simply wiped over the MEC/China voices with the American guy talking. Easily done, and IMO to the advantage of the majority of players :)

No offence to any chinese/arabic speakers out there.

To be honest i always have it set so they speak in there native tongue. Its actually very useful for hearing the enemy you can hear the chinese speaking chinese which alerts you or you hear a yank and it alerts you if your playing against them.

Also id much rather hear someone speak in arabic or chinese then listen to a yank butcher the english language with his whiney voice.

Yeah, though like I said at the time of post I didn't realize that you could change the voices.

Btw, whats with voices on SF for SAS?

I'm an arab, and I kinda like this idea of having diffrent languages...

however I did see alot of arabic saying mistakes grammer wise...funny though...

I wonder if Arabic/Chinese speakers have their own version of Engrish.com. If they do I bet BF2 is a gold mine, I've heard the translations there are pretty bad.

The chinese of BF2 is "mandarin". Most chinese people who live in the west speak "cantonese".

not exactly. i speak both english and mandarin. but i can tell you that those chinese that's spoken in BF2 definitely has a bunch of grammatical errors. they are using some weird words that I've never heard of. i cant understand over half of them.

immersion is key, even though all the translations are completely wrong (including SF where they absolutely brutalized the russian)

I use the foreign voiceovers, because:
-This way I can distinguish whether a friendly or a hostile grenade is being thrown next to me (just memorize the GRENADE! yells in 3 languages, not so hard)
-This way I can distinguish from the radio chatter when enemies come in. I love to play using my ears, and when some guy runs around blabbing to his commander for support, shouting about ENEMY XY SPOTTED or "I NEED BACKUP", it will tell me where he is AND in the latter case I know he's mostly alone.
Different languages make a huge amount of sense to me, I'm afraid.
That, and the chinese voiceovers are one of the funniest things ever.

I use the foriegn voices too for the same reason. It is a huge help when you are sneaking along and hear a radio command from the other team. It will allow you to get the drop on your enemy. There are only so many radio commands and after a while you just start to know what they mean without looking even if you don't understand the language. It is good to know the difference between the dying speach the guys make when they call for a medic and the voice for a medic reviving someone. Grenade is a good one to know too and if you don't know what "artillery in your area" sounds like in MEC, you could be in for a long round.

The Chineese voiceovers do rock. In vent I say KOI! KOI! KOI! instead of go just cause it cracks me up.

BF2 has really terrible mandarin. I grew up in China and I can't understand about a quarter of what they say, which is bad when it's something important.
Most Chinese people who live in America don't speak Cantonese. Cantonese is definitely the largest single dialect group, but collectively more people speak non-mandarin. Also, many cantonese people speak some mandarin as well, and can understand most of it, while on the other hand anyone not from the South Eastern region would have little incentive to learn another dialect. Mandarin is the official pronounciation of Chinese, and most people have accepted that. Cantonese, like any other dialect doesn't deserve to be parallel to Mandarin, which is the one uniform way of pronounciation.
