i'm pretty new too the game and i have tried for hours to get used to the helicopter controls but try as i might i just can't.

is there a way to execute a turn without dispelling speed and becoming a sitting duck?

can i reconfigue the flight controls?

Yes and yes, to turn without slowing down all you have to do is pitch the nose down and to the right (if you want to turn right) and at the same time (if you are using the keyboard) hold down your yaw right key.

You can change all the controls under options; controls; helicopter.

Simply.. make some experiments (in singleplayer) combining mouse movements and W,A,S,D buttons.

That's the way I learned... But please do it in singleplayer so you will not annoy other player when you fly to the trees. :laugh:

Practice, practice, practice. I use keyboard only, however use what feels best to you. You don't need a joystick to fly a helicopter well.

Dragon Valley singleplayer on easy is a good map to try out chopper moves.
The AI will practically leave you alone and you have easy targets to engage. :)
