    Re: Essential Chopper Skills

Situational Awareness: although this should come to the pilot and gunner naturally, the development of this skill (especially in the pilot) can be of tremendous benefit to you and your team.

What do I mean by the above ? Having a very good understanding of the current situation your team is in, such as available vehicles (the whereabouts are also important), time/tickets left (along with the most beneficial flags to capture based on numbering forces in the surrounding areas), who is in what and how skilled they are (so that you can approach a confrontation with them in as favorable a way as possible): in other words, the pilot needs to have a view of the battlefield in the same way a player sees a chessboard.

Ultimately, his understanding of the multiple factors involved in the current battlefield will enable him to make the most advantageous decision. The previously mentioned, in combination with a proficient gunner, will render this duo almost unstoppable.

That last point "attack choppers are not ment for capping" is completly false. So many chopper pilots lose maps because they are not willing to get dirty and get a flag. This is why I learned how to fly in third person a long time ago. When capping the flag go into third person and you can see the entire area surrounding you and the flag. The attack chopper can do it all, and if your not "doing it all" your not a good chopper pilot.

The problem is that if you cap, you're going to be rather stationary, save for circling the flag where possible.
This equals instant death by enemy TV missile, which the 3d person view doesn't do much good against as is.

SO TRUE. im the happiest when i have someone who talks through our vent server or the VOIP option, all i gotta say while flying (ima better flyer than gunner) is "enemy helicopter by the south base" "tank going south"

          then BAM driver kill assist

For Buggys and Jeeps the pilot should use his rockets instead of wasting TV missiles, and the machineguns just don't work quickly enough.

If you use a short burst of chaingun on the driver, that will be even quicker than the pilot's missiles. Then the pilot does a 90° dance and you can take out the rest of the crew with equally short bursts in no time. That way you also never overheat.

Sometimes its a good idea to cap flags in a chopper. I was playing wake island and got a couple of quite good UH-60 gunners we were able to cap nearly all the flags in 10 minutes, I actually had 2 planes and a tank attacking me at one point and incredibly they still didn't stop us.

Yea well, i meant the Cobra and WZ-10 :p You don't need anything else than the Havocs 30mm gun to own the whole round.

Blackhawk != attack chopper. Nothing wrong in capping with a blackhawk, although I prefer dropping everyone on the ground and circling above them while mounting the guns (the chopper keeps circling as you know), then picking them up again.

It works with the Z-10 for me equally well. Not quite as well with the cobra, for some reason.

The little bird is also a great quick flag capper but then thats only if you play the PRMM mod.

                              Re: Essential Chopper Skills

I don't suck in the chopper, don't brag either.. I like to fly, but I don't be running for the chopper and tking people for it. Some of the maps in SF are really lame like Ghost Town is to small for choppers.

Anyway pretty much anytime I get into a helicopter vs helicopter match I win. I know tons of ways to move around, I'v seen people who like to think they are good jump into them and crash in the water. I'v even seen commanders go and fly attack helo's which is pretty lame. I can kill tanks in one pass, and I ain't no little bitch either I don't try to kill people when they takin off, no challenge... I hate being the only helicopter in the air, it gets boring with no competition...

Capturing bases with helicopters is pointless if you sit still at a base trying to capture it, you will most likely end up with 4 rockets flying up into your helo. As a Attack Helo you should be focusing on tanks, and armor. I love it when my commander and team spot stuff like that for me, because I will go take it right out.

If your going to fly then you need to make sure you've learned where every last Anti Air Craft missile is on the map. I usually look out side when I am flying and being locked onto, as I can still fly just as good as I can inside.

Also the best bet for taking out other helo's as to let the missile hit the top of the helicoter directly on 3 should kill it almost instantly. You can do it with one by shooting the driver out of it as well. It took me a bit of practice but I can almost always shoot someone out of their helicopter....

Anyway nice helicopter tutorial, maybe i'll get privillage of fighting you! So tired of these helo pilots realizing they will lose and either bailing or trying to fly into you... and I said trying

You had no way of knowing, but you just made my day! :)

Since yesterday afternoon (I'm on vacation for the next couple of weeks), I've been spending hours and hours in SP trying various axis and button assignments, but for the life of me using this joystick (Logitech Extreme 3D Pro) to fly a chopper is impossible! I can do a better job (a sucky job, yes, but still better) with the keyboard.

I have found, though, that if I change to chase view, then using a joystick seems to go much more smoothly.

I can also usually manage to get from point A to point B without a problem, but I have yet to figure out how to get the thing to STOP.

As others have said above, maybe a joystick is only good for jets, but unfortunately, I'm not interested in flying jets--only choppers.
