    Monthly Fees

Do you think we are moving towards a future where almost all games will require a monthly fee in order to play? MMO's are the next thing, they say. Even shooters will benefit, and some already exist (but again, with a monthly fee).

Do you think this will affect all games?

I'd say yes because personally (and sadly) I think the PC gaming market is dying, so the only online play that will be available, say, five years from now is console gaming. And correct me if I'm wrong as I don't play consoles, but don't all console MP games require monthly subscriptions?

Not for ps2, but for the xbox you can pay monthly or yearly. Although the difference with xbox live and a game requiring a subscription is xbox live was really usefull. It kept track of how good you were and placed you against like skilled players, it has a buddy list that shows you what each person is doing. Its really easy to start a clan. And there was hardly ever lag since xbox live has its own servers.

What about the upcoming PS3? I know you have no way of knowing, but guessing, do you think Sony will still offer MP for free and lose all that potential profit?

Good luck playing RTS on console.

            Re: Monthly Fees

Nope not all games, believe it or not games like BF2 have kicked an unbelievable amount of failed MMO's a** that are created all the time by other companies. Many many MMO's are created every year, fail, with no one even hearing about them as they get a sad amount of people.

It is true that ever since companies have seen the success of Everquest 1 they all rushed out to create MMO's most failed, a little succeeded. Have you ever played Planetside? An MMOFPS I played for 2 years, my favorite game of all time it was massive battles 300 v 300 or more people at a time at a single base. That game is now dying because the company has not been updating it. More people have heard of BF2 than Planetside because of its lack of advertizing.

So you see there are many factors cause MMO's to be unsuccessful. The well known, WoW will probably be in place for many many years to come...well because it was made by Blizzard and overhyped beyond most games. However, games like Everquest 2 which was anticipated almost as much as WoW....is losing population...it's not dying but it doesn't have as much as its previous game Everquest 1. I'm pretty sure when Vanguard comes out EQ2 will lose a lot of people but WoW will still be very stable. Plus, Guild Wars...a free MMO that has over 1 million people.

It really is only a certain amount of MMO's that really hold stability. Yeah, there are more successful MMO's out there than WoW and EQ2 but not an uber amount like non pay to play games like BF2 and the undying CS. There is still a larger market for non-MMO's.

And no PC gaming is definately NOT dying, LOL to who said that.

Well, laugh all you want, but the current console vs. PC ratio for sales is around $10B (B as in BILLION) to $1B.

So tell me, if you were running a gaming company, looking to the future, and wanting to make the most money, where would you focus your development? PC's or consoles? (Answer honestly with the point of view of an investor and not as a die-hard PC gamer. )

Now to be clear, I hate consoles, and I hope and pray this trend changes, but unless something revolutionary happens, the PC gaming market will wither and die. Sales prove that it is dying; this is a fact that can't be disputed. The speculation is whether or not it can make a comeback and dominate the market again.

Dude, the PC Gaming Market is not withering or dying away lol. Just like Xbox 360, when PS3 comes out they will be the thing of the moment, PC's will always improve and get better, thus more games will be created to keep up with them. PC Games are still booming, people said this when regular XBOX was coming out and....look now. Bill Gates isn't going to stop his empire of new software, and he controls it. And you know what? People will buy his new products, and when people buy them companies will make games for them.

XBOX 360 was all hyped up, did it kill online gaming to even less than a serious level? No freaking way lol! Do you see less servers now since the 360 came out lol? Is that what you really think? PS3 will be hyped up, come out but it will just be popular as Playstation 2 is right now when it is out for a few years. Consoles will not kill PC gaming. Gaming companies know that the PC players have a strong place in the market.

PC Gaming is NO WHERE NEAR withering away. Sorry if you think that it is, you're nuts. The PC will always hold a strong position in gaming.

Lol! Online console gaming killing online PC gaming! LOL!

                  Re: Monthly Fees

Heres somthing to think about... when new technology comes out in a year to make games extremely good, where are they game devs going to go to use it? xbox360? No because they can't upgrade it to encorperate the new features. PS3? nope. Revo? nope. Therefore from that year and on untill the newer consoles release more devs will move to PC.

Okay, this statement alone shows you are only talking as an enthusiast and not as an objective observer of the market. Right now (and for the last three years for that matter), the console gaming market is dominating the PC gaming market. This is not an opinion; why can't you understand that? It's a fact based on yearly revenue. You know, revenue? Money? Profit? The thing that drives all businesses?

                    <sigh> Anyway, whatever. Peace!

                      Re: Monthly Fees

No, I'm not talking as a fanatic of PC's...hell I own a XBOX 360. Just because consoles are CURRENTLY doing better than PC gaming of course, does that mean PC games are going to die? NO FREAKING WAY! PC gaming is still damn strong, I am not speaking as an enthusiast it is just damn obvious. Lol, you'll realize this years from now that your radical idea that online gaming will be dead is crazy. You think there'll be a great lack of online gaming servers? I cannot even begin to understand how the hell a person could even think this! *slaps forehead* . This is not a regular argument...it's common sense. Out of all these years of PC gaming it suddenly dies when it is currently HUGE?

And durrrr, of course profit drives business. So after all of these years of online gaming...consoles doing better...why has there not been a massive switch with these companies? Because there is still profit! So about a million people play BF2...are they all going to switch to consoles in the next few years? How about the hundreds of other online games, are they going to switch also? Lol!

...How old are you? The only conclusion I can come to is that you were trying to impress daddy with an economic issue....

I don't think I'm gonna try anymore....this is such common sense and an obvious answer.

                          Re: Monthly Fees

No i don't think there will be a monthly fee for games, why? because servers are hosted by us the user and other company's not associated to the game maker. MMO's have a fee because they host thier own servers and make it illegal for others to, MMO's servers also have to use the very best of server technology since they need to be able to support hundreds of players on a single server at one time not a tiny 16-32-64 players.

Unless EA and others decides they are gonna host thier own servers with the best technology avalible to them, i would never pay monthly fees.

Thanks! I need not continue this debate anymore because it is common knowledge that once an advocate starts attacking his opponent rather than the issue, he has admitted defeat.
