heres how ive seen it work. If the program starts, and gets to the menu, then it will allow you to play.
You said that when you start a game it freezes.
there are 3 possible explanations for this.

Old Drivers/Directx or some other resource that the game needs.
update video drivers, maybe reinstall.

Lack of Amperage needed to run bf2, pauses powersupply, freezes
(check sticker on powersupply, +3.3v - **A) it should be atleast 16 or it could be a problem.

Overheating, generally woulddnt happen instantly, but loading could warm it up. check temperature (i think 8500 shoulddnt ever be over 55C)

I just got an ATI Radeon 9550 that has 256 DDR for 20 dollars off too

I DONT think that it's ur video card at all, the only card I know and experienced that cant work for the game is RADEON 9200. But if you could, try buying a GeForce. It might help your problem, or update you ati driver to 5.13 at the website. And if you are planing on buying a new video card, try the GeForce 7800.
