What if mines, for friendly vehicles, would simply create a forcefield (it would be the size of the area the mine takes up). This means friendly vehicles could not pass over them (though fire could go through this "invisible wall"). This way it won't cause TKs, but also would not make mines a super weapon. Thoughts?

Ugh.
Yucky.
Suckage.
Me no likey dat idear.
I'm confused about why people think that IFF mines would turn them into super weapons. Seriously. Just because your teammates can drive over 'em doesn't mean that the enemy is suddenly going to stop being able to blast 'em. You can still only place 5 mines per engineer which is about enough to cover 2 entrances/exits to a base... and most bases have 3 or more ways to get a vehicle in.
IFF mines would solve the TK problem and make 'em a useful part of the game.Comment

Re: An idea for the "engineer tk/mine" problem"
1) Try being engineer and you'll know why there is such desperation
2) The forcefield wouldn't be visible. It would be as existant in the game enviroment as a gaint score board which shows your score.
Letting friendlies run over your mines would take a lot of strategy out of the engineer class. You really need to think when you are inhibiting the path of both teams. (it would be like a n00b tube, only much worse and requiring no aim)Comment

Re: An idea for the "engineer tk/mine" problem"
I know what you mean about the stratgy element. I spent some time thinking about optimal placement for mines to allow friendlies to pass through areas while maximizing th chance of an enemy hitting 'em.
The result of my field tests were discoraging. People are too stupid en-mass to be able to deal with mines as they are.
I can't really express how much I hate the sound of your forcefield idea tho. I would find it disruptive in-game.
I still don't see how you think that IFF mines would make them super weapons. Yes, they would be easier to use and some of the strategy would be removed, but I hardly think you could call them super weapons for the reasons I listed above.
Moreover, there would still be some stratagy in placment. To maximize effective mine placement you have to put them in non-obvious places or they'll just get cleared by incoming enemies and/or artillery. You'll have to stick 'em in places like the lee of a rise (the back side where you can't see them during aprouch), or beside structures where they are less likely to be seen. I can see it still being a challange.
Please, if you really feel that IFF mines would be "super weapons" outline exactly why in some detail. I might be missing something.Comment

i have a better idea, TAKE OFF FRIENDLY FIRE
I dont care if you people are scared that people MIght BEE "throwing nades into rooms while running in and not have to worry about killing there team mates", well thats too bad you pu**ys cause no ff would fix more problems that it would cause.Comment

Re: An idea for the "engineer tk/mine" problem"
Honestly, I think they made a mistake when they changed the mines in the last patch. I don't think you should be able to blow them up. I think they should stay there until you die or something runs over them.
This carp about people using them by laying the around a flag and then tossing a nade in to clear out the bad guys defeats the purpose of them to begin with and anyone with half a brain would simply throw a nade in themselves when they saw them scattered at the flag.
I do think they should change them again. If you get killed because you ran over one of your teammates mines, you should not be able to punish them for your stupidity, nor should the teammate get any negative points for the TK.Comment

Think about what that would mean in-game for a moment.
How long do you think it would take griefers to figure out that they could mine TK all friggen night without any sort of downside?
FYI, IFF stands for Identify Friend or Foe. An IFF mine would only blow up if an enemy hits it. This would solve all TK issues without allowing the mines to be abused for intentional TKing.
I do sorta like Var's idea of friendly mines disarming when friendlies drive over 'em, then require an engineer to re-arm 'em. I suspect it's too complicated (and elegant) a solution for Dice to pick up on tho.Comment

Re: An idea for the "engineer tk/mine" problem"
When I thought it out, I figured it like this. You lay the mine out, until you die or someone drives over it/you pick it up, it stuck in that spot. I can get that the tk part might be an issue, but I'm just thinking out loud. I did not see the griefers being an issue because I was assuming you could only lay out 5 mines at a time anyway right? So it's not like you could throw them all over the place. Plus you need to be re-supplied by someone as well, which as we all know is not always easy to get done.Originally posted by Wargimp*Sigh*

Re: An idea for the "engineer tk/mine" problem"
I like the idea of IFF type mines (glad you explained what they were). At the very least, have a different icon. The other day I went through the land bridge on Karkand and saw the big red X's in front of me, I presumed they were C4 and drove over them and thusly died.
I didn't punish the person and told them I was sorry and thought they were C4. If there was a different icon, the engineer shouldn't be punished if a friendly drives over them.
I don't mind the mines being destroyed, it allows vehicles who are paying attention to poorly placed mines to have some sort of "defense" against them. Though one time I was hiding by a fence in Dalian plant and my buddy had placed mines by the entrance to the base. The enemy comes flying in their attack chopper and firs at me. It ends up blowing up the mine and my buddy gets charged with the TK. Nice thinking there Dice.Comment

Re: An idea for the "engineer tk/mine" problem"
I dont like any of these ideas ... I think forcefield is ridiculous and would take realism out of a game that can barely scrape together what little realism it has ... not flamin the game cuz i luv it but ... you cant just solve one problem only to weaken the game in another aspect ...
On the opposite side ... the engineer class has the potential to be one of the most strategic classes if only something was changed ... altering enemy courses and/or destroying enemy vehicles is a very neat concept but most players never get to strategize with the engy like this becuz of the 50/50 chance of kill or tk ...I believe that something needs to be changed for all the engy luvers to be able to plan the move ... If it stays as it is now ... there is no hope for this class ... I can honestly say that i have never seen someone with Engineer as there "Favorite Class" and xxx hours of gameplay behind it ... Tis a Shame IndeedComment
