Short for 'modification'.

They vary from small mini-'mods' to large scale 'total conversions'.

Mostly, the mini-mods change small things, such as the reality mod that changes accuracy, fire-rate, etc.

Total conversions change the game play completely and make it into something totally cool (DCom) or just plain weird.

(Most of the more anticipated Total conversions aren't out yet).
