Reducing radio/message spam in the team UI without sacrificing communication.

One of the most voiced complaints by casual players in full servers is the degree of voice message spam created by team members spotting enemies or requesting specific class support. A quick search of this forum nets half a dozen radio-spam related complaints posted in the last few weeks alone, and I'm sure there are thousands of other players out there who agree but don't bother to come here.

To improve team communication for advanced players and reduce annoyance for everyone, I think that radio messages should have a filtering mechanism with regard to player role and player location.

    Spotted Messages:
For nearly all players, 'enemy spotted' radio messages outside their immediate HUD-map zoom level are a useless annoyance, especially in a large/full server. This is a clear obstruction to teamplay, so it is my view that spotting messages should be filtered with the following criteria:
    • Lone Wolf: Only enemies spotted at locations within the current zoom level of a player's HUD-map or enemies spotted by a teammate who is within twenty meters should be displayed, with the corresponding radio message played.
    • Squad Member: Same as Lone Wolf, but in addition playing the radio message for all spots observed by squad members who are located within the current zoom level of the player's HUD-map.
    • Squad Leader: Radio message for all spotted enemies on their HUD-map at current zoom, plus all spots observed by any squad member, plus text-only displays for all spots sent by the commander.
    • Commander: All spotted messages should be recieved and played, except as listed below:
    • All Players: Duplicate messages for units that are already 'spotted' on the map should not be played again. The general 'enemy activity at location' message for missed/general spots should be limited to one trigger every ten seconds by any one spotter.
    Supply/Medic requests:
Once again, an incredibly useful feature which becomes overwhelming in large numbers and annoying when abused. Each player should be limited to one medic and one ammo request in a ten-second period, with the following additional restrictions:
    • Only non-medic players who are within 10 meters of a wounded or critically injured teammate should be able to send a "Need Medic" message. Selecting the option if they don't qualify should still highlight nearby medics on the map, but not spam their team with the message.
    • Only players who actually need ammo should be able to send a "Need Ammo" message. Selecting the option if they don't qualify should still highlight nearby Support players on the map, but not spam their team.
    Immersion Concerns:
Radio messages are an entertaining and immersive part of the game that contributes to both fun and teamplay. I think that the rules above will make the game more immersive by reducing radio spam and unrealistic repeated messages, but if the battlefield is totally quiet we've gone too far. To compensate, I recommend that if a player has not actually heard a radio message in more than ~30 seconds, the next message sent by their team should be heard regardless of the above filters.

I hope you think that my proposal is effective and simple enough to warrant being implemented by DICE in the upcoming 1.2 patch. If you agree, try to point people who do have influence toward this post. :)

Remove medic revive spam, healing bag spam, ammo spam. Allow the voices of that text to be heard in game but just remove the text.

I like the general idea and most of the details you mentioned. The game needs to be quieter with the radio messages being spammed like crazy. I would even like the ability to mute the commander. Some commanders give a decent amount of info, some talk way too much.

It would also be nice to be able to mute a person in your squad that has their mic volume to high or mic to close to their mouths.

Yep, even when I'm commander I get messages from 10 year olds requesting artillery on my men and request supply drops no where, along with them whining to me.

The messages themselves are generally useless anyway, because they don't really pin-point anything. The importance of spotting the enemy so that they appear on the radar is the more important thing. I dunno about you, but I tend to keep one eye on the radar when I'm playing anyway.

I have no problems with the spotting at all, usually my team is retarded and doesn't spot anything anyways

                Rubbish. No good.

You can be totally loaded, but if your gonna park yaself in a area for a while, you gonna want ya main ammo man to drop a few for hard times ahead. Same goes with meds really.

You wanna cut it down voice chatter? (good idea) I want to add more !!. 'Cover Me' and 'Stop Firing that bloody gun' spring to mind.

Yep, this would immediately go a long way to removing a lot of the spam.

Good thread though, I hadn't thought of discussing this but it is an issue. If you want to text chat to your team or squad, whatever you type is rushed off the screen within a nano second! This needs to be addressed too. Maybe a separate area for chat, or chat stays present for a default five seconds before moving off the screen. Spotted messages would still scroll.

There are tons of little improvements like this that would make the game much more manageable and fun to play. Personally, I can't even use text chat because hitting E will drop me out of my vehicle and hitting F will bring up my squad/commander screen (I remapped it). Way cool programming!

That being said, your ideas are well thought out - though i don't really agree on your emphasis of level of HUD zoom. I'm zooming in and out all the time and to restrict based off that seems silly.

Taking out the on-screen text, which is useless and makes text messages difficult to find, and limiting enemy spotted to once every 10 seconds or so seem like good suggestions.

Yeah, but when you're zooming in and out, it's because you're paying attention to a differently-sized area. Getting spotted messages from outside your HUD-zoom doesn't do you any good unless you pull up the map every time you get one, in which case you might as well just be all the way zoomed out.

Zoomed out = all the spotted messages you can see on your HUD map.
Zoomed in = all the spotted messages you can see on your HUD map.

It's just a differently-sized area of the map, and when the viewable area is so variable it doesn't make sense to use a fixed radius for radio notifications.

I agree. If I am traveling a long distance in a vehicle, I will zoom out, but when I get close to a base, I will zoom in. If I am zoomed out, I don't need to hear some one throwing med packs when they are far away from me.

But then again, there could be option of your style. BF 2 doesn't give you much options for anything besides the basic. Heck, they didn't even give you a favorite server list when the game was released and probably won't give you a buddy list (as it was promoted before the game came out).

What he's saying is, regardless of how zoomed (or not) you are, you shouldn't hear about spotted enemies outside of your HUD. They are of no use to you anyway as they won't show up.

Seems like an alright idea, but it's rather complex, don't you agree? Imagine being a nub and having to learn all that, or read it in a format like that PLUS everything else they've got to worry about. I guess it's not brutal or anything, but it just seems too specific.

..Personally, like vengeance said, just doesn't bother me. Would rather focus on more immediate problems like bunny t00bing and dolphin diving, etc. Countless other problems of course.
