Maybe you could try uploading the jpg to this site
http://virusscan.jotti.org/ and see how many AV's pick it up

Seriously though, I've been having a LOT of problems with Battlefield 2 and having viruses in some of its files. Nortan cought a few in the Gamespy Install files.

Gamespy seems really fishy to me, and I've deleted ALL of their files and anything related.

I didn't take the time to read through this thread so I apologize in advance if my question has been answered.

Can my computer be infected with a virus or spyware by opening JPG's or GIF's? I have always been under the impression that malware could not be spread in images.

Agreed, I'm baffled by this. There are morons out there putting Viri into the BF2 Server Logos and all people seem to be talking about is the pros and cons of Panda Anti Virus

Panda is a great AV, it's all the other trash that they have added to it in the last two years (an awful Firewall, etc) that people are probably on about. Simply answer.. turn them off and leave the AV running

I'm more concerned about the posibility of this worm spreading through BF2 Server Logo's when they are highlighted in the Server Browser.

Now please... stop hijacking the thread with pathetic "my AV is bigger than yours" posts.

Indeed. Someone warns others of a virus and the first reply just mentions the Av used to detect the virus???

JDUB, afaik it's impossible to put malware in a .jpg and have it execute when you open it in an image browser. You'de have to open the jpg in a browser and then click on it which takes you to a malware page. I doubt that it could affect BF2.

Actually, thats not true. Any software application that can handle the HTTP protocol could attempt to download the JPG image. I could write a DOS EXE in 2 minutes which could do it. It's just a application protocol over TCP/IP.

Now as I am about to go out this next bit is going to be a little fuzzy without any qualified statements, but you can also change the extension assignment on a webserver to assign JPG to PHP (for example) so that code called test.jpg is executed when a GET is attempted. The receiving application would have to read the MIME statement to confirm that it was of type JPEG in order to confirm this. If it didnt then it could just download the code. What this virus appears to do is redirct the client to the dodgy code when they client attempts to open the JPEG. For good measure I would expect the virus/worm also returns the JPEG image itself so that you would never know there was an issue.
