From reading the forum here I was able to narrow down a problem with BF2 on dual-core machines that cause very frequent "Connection to Server Lost" messages, if you have this problem, you can ALT-Tab out of the game, right click on the process in the task manager, and set the Affinity for the game to use on CPU0 (single CPU core) if that works for you, then that was the problem. Now, obviously that's a pain to do every time you play, so I found this application (free) that will let you set the priority an and affinity for the application itself so when it boots it will use the right affinity. This is not a perfect solution, but it will work until EA gets Dual-Core detection figured out and either makes use of dual-core processors, or at least codes their application to run on a single one, or somehow make it work with the net code so it doesn’t fail.
Make sure it's not your firewall, network configuration, or ISP before jumping to this fix. It's of course not a good idea to screw with your CPU settings unless that's for sure the problem.
Also: you will need to add...
+menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +modPath mods/xpack +ignoreAsserts 1
...to the advanced parameters to be passed to make a seperate launcher for Special Forces, but for BF2 you just need to selecte the executable from the program directory, and set the number of processors to 1.
