Okay heres what Id like to know ... Im getting a router soon and I heard that you need to unlock ports on the onboard firewall to play the game ... My questions are ... Do I need to unlock the ports if I never host a server? Are the problems with wireless routers only? And most routers have 8 or 13 ports ... are these the same type of ports that must be unlocked and if so, can certain routers not play bf2 becuz they do not support enuf ports? so many questions so little time hehe ... xmas right around the corner

I'm no expert but I didn't have to change anything on my router's firewall. I didn't need to enable the DMZ or open any ports. It might be a different story if you're going to run a server though.

you don't need to open ANY port to paly bf2.

If you want to host a server then yes you would forward certain ports to the local ip adress of the pc hosting the server.

Wireless yes will be crappy for gaming due to latency which causes spikes (lag).

DO NOT EVER use a DMZ zone only noobs use DMZ there is no reason to do it unless your too much of a noob to forward ports and if thats the case you have no business hosting anything.

I run a Linksys Router with my Cable modem and i run into no problems just make sure it is installed correctly and the setting are correct. Remember firewalls can effect ports so make sure all the BF2 ports are open!

I have a Linksys BEFSR41 v 1 and I have not had to change a thing and I have 2 PCs on that router that both play BF2 online at the same time.

Only if you are having: >>> Connection issues <<< typically are caused by one or more ports being blocked by a firewall, router, or even your Internet Service Provider to help maintain security. These ports are the doorways used to send and recieve information between your computer and the server. You must configure your router/firewall to have the game's ports open in order to connect to the servers properly.

The ports for Battlefield 2 are as follows:

You may also need to have your Internet Service Provider open these ports for you. For help configuring a firewall or router you may need to refer to the manufacturer.

Also i think you may be confusing the sockets for the ports. The ports are a conceptual part of the router, built into the firmware code, not the things you plug the cables into. :)

Other than that the guys above are spot on, i use a wireless router and have no problems

So ... there is absolutely no limit to how many ports (conceptual) I am able to open on a router?

Also, wired routers sound like the way to go, is the any difference in gameplay depending on which router i buy?

Correct (well, there may be alimit imposed by the router's firmware, but in theory that's right), but obviously the game uses specific ones, so you only need to open those.

I play BF2 with a wireless modem/router, but using the wired ethernet connection. Although technically any modern router is more than fast enough for BF2, I do find it runs better through the 100mbit wired connection. Either way though, i'd still buy the wirless router, you can connect to it with a wire for your BF2 PC but you also have the option of wireless

ya i run 2 desktop computers and 1 wireless lap and no probs mine is linksys Wireless-G 2.4GHZ (picked up for 59$). :)
