Definitly Nforce 4. The Via chip has been improved a lot (they have also had issues with them), but I have an Asusu A8N-SLI mobo with the N4 chip. The best.

I don't have a strong enough opinion to vote, but I have a VIA chipset in my machine. For being a few years old, the thing performs fairly well, can't say I've had any complaints.

I'm definitly a Nforce guy now, had a VIA laden Epox board a couple of years back, and had alot of i/o and sound issues. Went to a nforce 2 board and never looked back. Better drivers & better stabilty hands down.

Unfortunately when I built my system, Asus didn't have any nforce4 chipset motherboards with support for socket 939 *sigh*, so I have a VIA atm...let me tell you comparing via to nvidia is like comparing a pinto to a porsche...

Well ok, maybe not that bad, but not too much of a stretch either...

Is there even a need for comparison? VIA / ULI / SIS are all more towards the budget end of the chipsets, while ATI / nVidia / Intel are more towards the high-end market.

You are absolutely correct. I use a VIA system and I do not have any problems with it. It is a mature chipset that works very reliably but my next computer will have Nforce in it. At this moment Nforce is the best chipset for AMD Athlon64.

Those early KT133 and KT266 could make problems on old Win98 but on Win XP they worked just fine when set up correctly. And also mobo maker should be Abit, Asus or MSI not some no name. First really stable and best working VIA chipset was KT600. I actually have zero problems with it. It works great but at the same time Nvidia started taking over things and newer machines should have Nvidia Nforce cause it is better. VIA doesn't have as good a solution for Athlon64 platform.
