Not enough people defend assets

Lately it seems that when I'm commander I spend most of my time repairing assets. Asking people to defend or repair assets gets me nothing. Everyone would rather do their own thing padding their stats, etc. Just last night on Oman our team was leading until the other team started attacking my assets. We went from a nice lead to losing the round because I spent half the round dropping assets on the UAV/Scan trailers to repair them, and not enough time helping the team. When I asked for help no one answered. I ordered all 5 squads to defend the ship. One idiot on headset asked me why he needed to defend the ship. I told all what was going on. Nothing. No one came to help so I started getting frustrated. The same meathead on headset said he was helping me. He was flying a jet. He wasn't helping me, he was padding his stats.

Anyway, very frustrating. I wish more people would help commanders defend and repair assets. They just don't get that it helps them in the long run.

Oi, yeah. This happens a lot. I can't really say I blame those people tho. There's not much pay off for them to help a commander out in that situation.

However, there's a couple tricks I use.
- Spot the asset campers manually. Someone might get it into their head that killing the enemy spec ops guy is worth a couple point to 'em. In the worst cases, I'll ignore the rest of the battle until someone finally kills the asset campers.

- Do it yourself. I'm liking the MP-7 SF unlock quite a bit. It's handy for taking out da bad guys at much better range than any of the other engineer weapons. Typically, when I'm commanding, I'll hide somewhere non-obvious but close to my assets. This way, when people expectedly ignore my cries for help, I can just nip over and deal with the problem directly.

Yeah, I have had to take matters into my own hands before but that 1) gets me killed sometimes, 2) takes me away from commanding.

I agree 100%. In the 2 or so months since I have owned BF2, I can safely say that I have Never Ever seen anyone repairing commander assets. Commanders always gotta fix their own shiz with a supply drop which leaves squads without a supply drop that they may need. However, the glass is half full/half empty depending on the person. I see the ineptitude of the other team not being organized enough to repair their commanders assets as a ticket to artillery -- and commander -- free BF2. All in all the commander mode is an incredibly poorly thought out gameplay mechanic.

You can't really blame your team for not wanting to defend the commanders assets since they would spend most or all of the game doing nothing but waiting. But when your team refuses to help when they are being attacked or have already been destroyed that is pathetic. If nothing else they can spawn as a engineer next time they die and get a few easy repair points.

You keep saying how you never see anyone doing anything good, but that goes counter to my own experiances.

Last night I was Commanding on Raging Rebels and had a 3 man squad deside to defend and maintain my assets all on their own.
The next round, I returned the favor to my team by making a squad called HoldingOpps and focused only on defending critical locations as assigned by the commander.

True, it more common to see stupidity, but I've seen lots of good teamwork too.

Maybe it's because I lead by example. Maybe you play on crappy servers.
Or maybe, just maybe, it's you.

well it helps to have a commander on coms with you.

USI does this ... and commander assets take some hits ... one of us spawn as engineer upon their next death and problem solved.

its great with a minimum of three USI on same side
one can be commander plus a squad of two guys to attack and/or defend = many wins :evil:

Well, I play on lots of different servers including a few places I reg at but I honestly rarely see teamwork, even at my favorite haunts. Never is a bit of an exaggeration but neither is it far from the truth. I know there are good players out there, unfortunately, the majority rules the minority so it's better to just say Never.

The best bit of teamwork I ever seen was on the demo of all places. I was in a squad where everyone was doing what they were supposed to do and we were single handedly taking over the entire map. But alas, I have yet to have this kind of experience again, and I'm not the type of person that is easily amused by clan gaming so this rules out having a decent game like that again.

Yeah, I dig. It's a distraction and it hurts the team overall, but it hurts less than being a blinded commander.

I've found myself becoming a more active commander lately. There was one particular point in that same round I mentioned above where I noticed a couple enemies had end ran the guys defending our assets and were making for one of our planes (yeah, there was actually a plane in the hanger that wasn't totally surrounded by campers!). I didn't want it to fall into enemy hands so I pulled outta command mode and ran over to the runway. Planted a couple mines and let them steal the plane. They got about 30 feet.

I've also discovered than on SF maps, the ATV is a commander's best friend! The thing is fast, yet small enough to hide. When my assets get blown, all I have to do is boot over to 'em and drive past to fix 'em back up again.

Sometimes ya just gotta change up your tactics a bit, ya know?

This is the thing tho... I've found that if I set a good example, my squadmates tend to fall in line fairly quickly. I tend to spend the most time as a squadie since it's easier to get good teamwork going from that angle. All you have to do is stick with your SL. *poof* teamwork.

So rather than potshotting your own planes, TKing for vehicles, and moaning about how bad everyone else is, you might want to consiter taking charge.
Consiter it a challange.

I do as the commander says no matter what.
