Can't bind "shift" key.

My roommate has run into this problem several times and would like to have it fixed. When reinstalled his game and patching it he tried to rebind the shift key to crouch but it says it's already bound in the heli controls. Of course, there isn't any such binding in the heli controls so he can't unbind it. Is there someway he can rebind the shift key to crouch for infantry?

Not that I know of. EA has released a list of "un-bindable" keys, but I cannot remember them all. Search EA's support FAQs, I know its in there somewhere.

Is there a .con file that I might be able to change? Maybe edit it in manually?

You can pretty much bind anything to any key by manually editing the controls.con file contain in your profile subdirectory.
