i have noticed several times while flying a chopper (transport or attack) that every once in a while there will be an octagon show up in the middle of your HUD then float away. WHAT THE HECK is this?

That is your hover indicator.
If you are in a perfect hover, it'll appear.
It is meant to help you control your hover. If the box begins to move, that means your chopper is moving (in the opposite direction if I'm not mistaken...I don't use it often). If your chopper is sliding to the left, the box moves to the right to tell you so.
You can use it to help you slide around or you can use it to maintain your hover by keeping the box centered.
