I was not a BF1942 player, no I got into this from Planetside... I picked up BFV and started playing that too. While Planetside was fun, after a while other games came out but the subscription made me feel obligated to play it. While it did offer a little more than BFV in the end it did not offer enough extra to justify it. Add to that the dubious quality of the first expansion and I simply didn't want to pay every month...

The present BF2 system I like... I buy and play, company funds itself producing expansions that continue the life of the game. While I am still enjoying it I buy them but as I am not paying a subscription I don't feel obliged to play. I play when I want to because it is fun...

Looks like many of you have misunderstood my meaning. I don't think BF2 will become a traditional pay to play game, but for those who would like to compete evenly with the other players then they will have to continue to pay in the form of expansions. Just in case you missed it...

The Special Forces expansion is just the first example of this. If EAs market research shows that it would be profitable to sell further content then you can expect to see similar expansions to ranked play. As such ranked BF2 will become a pay to play game in all but subscription.
Quick summary: I see the future of ranked play essentially becoming "pay to play". When loads of new content is freely available if players are willing to forgo the global ranking system, the question that comes to mind is how much is the global ranking system worth to you?

I can now see that I chose a very poor title for this topic but it would still be nice for people to read more than the subject line before writing an opinion.:p

yes i understood and this is a very interesting observation as well... since games have been able to make money in more ways then just retail (ebay selling of accounts and items) game companys are starting to realize the money making power they truly have over a community. its already started in someplaces, but soon game makers will develope whole worlds to play in and the items and objects will be ways for them to make money as well.

It wouldn't particulary phase me if they made it Pay 2 Play for ranked servers, but something that I would like to see is a system like they have in Gunbound for example. So that the points you earn in games or getting points for winning rounds are able to be used for something apart from just getting a higher rank. ie: New weapons, tweaks for your guns such as better scopes, silencers, Grenade launcher attachments etc..
