when i heard that you cant play vanilla bf2 maps in special forces, i was ****ed. its not an expansion if it doesnt redeem the original content, most disapointing. why am i disapointed? because i like bf2 maps, and i like sf maps, why not be able to play them both within a special forces server. i have to exit sf and load up bf2 if i want 2 do that now.
special forces is a 30 dollar game that requires bf2, not an expansion

But you get all the new guns on the old maps. I guess they thought that was good enough, works for me right now. -

I kept the SF disc in since installing it and it too works with VBF2 just fine. In fact you don't have to get out of the game at all. just select a VBF2 server and the game ITSELF backs out to your desktop and then reloads the game AND loads the server you had picked. the only down side I can see is it takes a few extra minutes and some times if there was only a slot open or two you get the "server full screen"
I don't care though.Comment

Re: special forces is a 30 dollar game that requires bf2, not an expansion
the point i was making had nothing to do with the amount of time it takes to switch games.
my point is that if its an expansion, we should be able to play bf2 maps within. bf2 has 4 nonjet maps and sf is all non jet, a map cycle that included both sets would be more entertaining than one or the other.Comment

We get it, but there's a flip side to this issue.Originally posted by roger smiththe point i was making had nothing to do with the amount of time it takes to switch games.

Lots of people would get upset if they were playing on a server that kicked them off every time is went to a SF map. They'd rant and scream about how unfair it is to "force" them to buy SF if they want to play on a server without getting kicked.
I also strongly suspect that there are some core engine differences between regualr BF2 and SF. It's likely that a server running both sets of maps would have to close down and re-load each time it switched maps from one set to the other. This is evidenced by the fact that your client has to do this in order to connect to the different servers. I'm sure that they would have liked to avoid that if they could have... but it's likely a technical limitation.Comment

Shazbot!
I think the easy fix for this is not allowing you to join a SF (green) server unless you have SF. I miss the additional vehicles on normal servers enough that I've barely play the SF maps. The ability to play a 'different game' every night is what keeps BF2 going for me. (Closest to Tribes 2 I've found actually)Originally posted by WargimpLots of people would get upset if they were playing on a server that kicked them off every time is went to a SF map. At first I thought it was because they did not want the grapple, etc in the other maps, but the Iron Gator map shows they have the ability to toggle these on a per-map basis. I fail to see how they could not modify the old maps for use with SF if the engine differs, i.e. they have the height maps, building locations, etc.... But ignorance is bliss, and thus I remain happy (except for missing Tribes 2:cry: ).Originally posted by WargimpI also strongly suspect that there are some core engine differences between regualr BF2 and SF. RIP Tribes.
You just HAD to bring that up didn't you!
Anyway, yeah, your suggestions sound workable, but I suspect that they want SF players to focus on the specifically balanced SF maps. That said, I wouldn not be suprised at all to see some standard BF2 maps released for SF as "bonus" content.Comment

What's 17 bucks for new guns, maps and vehicles? Nothing imo, 30$ is pushing it a little bit though.
17 bucks, cant beat that, checking nowComment

I do think it is idiotic that there cannot be servers out there running in mixed map mode. Yes it would tick off the people that did not purchase the new game...but screw them - WE ARE PAYING CUSTOMERS - lmao.
Seriously - if they ever got the server browser working correctly - there could just be a check box for "don't let my dumbass that did not purchase the expansion connect to a server that is running both maps so i don't whine like a little bitch when i cant connect to a new map"Comment
