You need to play on ranked servers to earn global points to spend on unlocks.

You find ranked servers by checking off the ranked filter box in the multiplayer/internet server search screen and hitting the apply button.

You cannot join a game from the start..there is no way of knowing the status of the current match on a server unless you start looking at every server's player details and finding once where all the scores are still zero.

A clan is simply a group of gamers that play together, some compete. Visit the clan section here at the forums and visit some clan web pages for more info.

Don't give any money to GameSpy.

There is so much to learn, are ranked servers easy to join?

Can you join a game that clans are playing or do they restrict entrance?

Are there any people here in a clan and if so whats it all about, benefits and such? I guess its by invitation only.

So i just find a ranked server, join in, Try my hardest to get

And Ranked servers are easy to join, u can join clan servers (if they are in a match they usually pw the server)

If ur looking for a Clan head to the clan section and make a thread of it

1. Just click and join... easy as that (look for the "ranked" symbol, it looks like a corpral insignia)

2. Yes, I believe its not allowed to password protect a ranked server

3. Im in a clan..... Clans a VERY varied... some compete on a very high level and require total dedication and daily practices... Some are in the opposite end where they hardly know what a Ladder is (place to comepete for clans)... Depending on your own ambition you'll know what to choose...

one of the best benefits of being in a clan is having online friends to play with... makes the enjoyment of the gamer better, and enhances the teamwork experience.

No, its not all invitation.... Some clans runs ranked servers... if you ever find one you like, and would like to join... stick around and play... either you can ask them, or they will ask you... never been any harm in asking

5. kills and assists is about points.. (there where just a thread about the points of the different things) Dolphin dive is when you jump, and while being in the air you go prone.... (you wont notice, but for others it looks like you are doing a dolphin dive)

Because they allow for modified content, like the PRMM (minimod), and not everyone cares about unlocks and stats.

A bad score will show in your stats, but your positive points keep adding up to your unlocking of a weapon no matter how poor you do.

Frustration, death, pain, suffering, bad attitudes from many players, lag, teamkills, disconnects.. And awesome teamplay, hardcore firefights.. sometimes.

Unranked servers exist because not all ppl care about stats.... infact alot of ppl believe that the stats system have ruined a potential great game of Teamwork

Ranked servers are significantly more expensive to rent than unranked... for starters only officially approved EA server providers are allowed to offer ranked servers. So no, you canrt make one yourself (except for a 30 day offer with gamespy I saw somewhere a while ago)

Badly on a ranked server.... not quite sure I understand... If you are not as good as the rest of the players, you simply wont raise in ranks as quickly as you could if being good .

hmm... what to expect ?...... well.... Morons... getting punished for TK's clearly not your fault, and getting spawnraped by jets, while the AA does absolutely NOTHING..... anyway.. its still fun...

Find a server you enjoy (a ranked one)... and stick to it

Ranked servers exist so that players can be competitive and keep track of their statistics and also to receive awards and promotions.

Ranked servers DO cost to run (as does any server) but they are at a premium cost as only certain providers are allowed to host ranked servers.

If you do badly on a ranked server, the stats you accumulated during that round will always be attached to that account.

For example, if you end up Teamkilling a lot of people and your final score is negative, your global score will actually decrease and those teamkills will be permanently registered and added to your running total.

Expect to die a lot during your first days and expect a lot of silence when asking for help. Some players, however, can be helpful and will provide you with assisstance in-game.

I've been here two weeks, I'm just getting to grips with the whole unlocks/ranks thing.

Dolphin Diving - From my experience its running jumping and then going prone(laying down) in mid air in order to evade bullets.

You may here other such terms as;

Bunny Hopping - Lots of jumping and crouching in order to evade bullets.

"Noob Tube" or n00b t00b - A derogatory term for someone using the M203 Grenade Launcher (thats the secondary wepon on the Assault kit)

As you don't know what a Clan is I take it your new to "Online Gaming"

Just be nice enjoy your game try not to **** people off, although it can be amusing. You're going to experience lagg, death, abuse, general **** that tags along with the internet, but other than that its great fun and there can be great fights.

Just a couple of additional tips:

SQUADS
When you call up your squad screen, you see a list of squads on the left. Each squad has a squad leader, who is "in command" of the squad. Squads can use VOIP (Voice Over IP), a built-in communication tool where you can speak/talk to eachother via microphone.
When a squad member dies, he can spawn on his squad leader again (if the leader is alive!). Therefore you should try to protect your squad leader. Imagine; a squad leader is hiding in a corner, while his squad members keeps spawning on him and tries to take over the flag.
Try to join a good squad and play with them; this way you'll learn faster and experience more teamwork and fun!
To find a good squad, look at the squad screen when you join them. All squad members will be marked on the map with a green dot, isntead of the normal blue dot. If the "green dots" are sticking together, chances are they're focused on teamwork. If the green dots are spread out all across the map, or the squad leader is AFK (away from keyboard), try another squad.
Remember to stay close to and work together with your squad! And follow your squad leaders orders! You see, squad leaders can set objectives for their squad, which is marked as green/yellow/white/pruple lines on your mini-map (the small map in the top right corner). Follow his instructions!

FLYING
If you want to fly a helicopter or jet, DO IT OFFLINE! Do not jump into a jet/heli on a full server, as chances are you'll crash it (and kill any passengers) which results in lots of ****ed of teammates.
Practice offline until you get the hang of it, before trying it online.

MEDICS
As a new player, it might be a good idea to pick the Medic class. This way you can heal yourself if you lose health, and have a higher survivability rate.

In my one player adventure i had no idea how to fly a helicopter or jet, where do you get them from?

So Who hosts these ranked servers? Not the actual companies but the players.

How come it doesnt cost to play on them if it costs so much to set them up?

Surely EA should host them for free since you bought the game otherwise its just a money spinner for them and their authorised Server hosters (if thats a word). It should say on the box, £19.99 for half a game plus a monthly subscription of £££ to complete the game.

So i can chat to people in the game, like Skype?

Playing BF2 online will always be free as servers are basically paid for by groups of gamers. Gamers want to host a server..they pay. Some people donate to keep them going. Others fund their servers 100% themselves.

If you have a headset already set up, you can chat with anybody in your squad by using the default button 'B'.

Otherwise, lots of people use TeamSpeak to chat and some servers advertise the IP of their teamspeak server in the welcome message.

TK = team kill (killing a teammate)

Sure..it happens by accident...but it's the intentional TK that gets the blood boiling

Armed with basic intel, a feather duster and a packet of porky scratchins im off to war. The info you guys provided has cleared the haze of ignorance, its time to get busy.

And one more thing,

Can you unlock any items without being on a ranked server?

If No,

Then if no ranksed servers exist you could only play half a game, i would want half my money back!

If anyone has any more helpful tips for the complete beginner then i will check this post again.

It maybe worth making a newbie thread for tips and hints on getting stuck in.
