AGP Aperture Size?

Hey,

I have a question regarding my AGP aperture size, looking at my specs below what do you recommend I set my AGP aperture size to? Some posts say 256 others 512.

Would it be damaging to the card to set the wrong aperture size?

No, no damage. All it does is allocate system memory for use by the videocard if the videocard runs out of memory.

What you should set it to depends on your system specs and your problem.

If you have only a little video memory (like 128 or above) AND a lot of system memory (like 2 Gigs), I suggest setting it as high as it will let you (although, 512 is probably overkill, I bet 256 would be just fine).

However, if you have a 256MB video card and only one gig of memory, I would set it very low.

Check during the game to see how much of your memory you are using by alt tabbing out of the game and adding up the memory used by ALL processes in your task manager. The amount you have "left over" gives you a good sense of how much you can give to APG aperture size. However, you don't want to cut it very close because you are probably not seeing the max amount of memory that BF2 eats up.

The moral of this post? It depends. I hope this helps a bit. . . and I hope it isn't entirely wrong. . . it is how I understand it.

As for your specs. . .it probably won't matter WHAT you set it to. I have a similar system and I have it set to 256 and mine runs smooth.

I will have a look at my settings, I haven't ever changed it so it is currently at the default size. (what ever that may be )

Mine, by default, was set to "medium." I think it is a safe bet that you can run smoothly at significantly higher settings regardless of your apeture size.

Did any of your bother to read my post? It ALL depends on your system! I think, for most people with modern systems won't see any difference. Some might even see a performance HIT by increasing the size of it.

Just saying "it worked for me" is absolutely pointless because it totally ignores that the solution varies from person to person.

I'd say 128 should be fine, and you might not see any difference between 128 and 256, as your system looks pretty decent, expecially with the 2gb. You might want to beware of anything over 128mb aperture, though. Sometimes it can make your PC lock up and perform bad. Nothing that'll have lasting effects if you just bump the aperture back down, but just be cautious.

Like me, I just had to replace my nice 1gb of Corsair DDR400 PC3200 TwinX 2-2-2-5, with an old 512mb Corsair DDR333 2-2-3-5. Gotta send back my new modules on an RMA. I had to set my aperture down to 64mb, otherwise it'd act screwy with this punk stuff in here.

The video manufacturer's say you should set it for half of your video RAM. Which it will by default. ie 256 mb should be set at 128 mb. AIGHT?????
