Curious about mod installation - couple of questions.

I have had BF2 for about 2 weeks. I'm interested in looking at some of the mods, but want to be able to play BF2 as the standard game as well. Does installing mods keep your from playing the base game on game servers that are not modded? Does anyone know of instructions somewhere that tell how to install and activate/deactive mods when you want to use different ones? Can you install more than one mod at a time?

Sorry for all the questions, but I sure appreciate any answers you all can offer.

hello eko and welcome to the bf2 community!

to answer your questions, No it does not affect the base game whatsoever. Most reputable mods come as an exe that you install into your BF2 directory. To activate a mod, run bf2 and on the main menu go to Community, and then go to custom games. You will see all the mods you have installed here, just click on one and hit activate to make it active.

Also if you join a server with the mod already running, it will automatically load the correct mod, so you need not bother switching, it will do it for you.

Now, if your looking for an amazing team play mod that really ups the intensity and immersion of the game, i recommend:

I got a chance to try this out last night. This is a great mod! It doesn't change the game so much that it is a different game, but changes aspects that allow for a more fun experience. The most noticable changes were the missing health meter (which I didn't care for), the map style - attacking one base at a time (which I loved!), the muzzle rise on weapons and the better sounds related to the weapons. Overall, this is a great mod and a fantastic way to experience the game. The map style leads to more confrontational situations when trying to take a flag and is more realistic in my opinion. Thank you for suggesting this -- AND for your help in explaining how to use the mods. It couldn't have been any easier.

I have a question. Are the mod servers ranked? I doubt they are but I thought I would ask. Thanks!

I'm not absolutely sure since I was just on there for about an hour, but I do not believe they are. I doubt any of the mod servers are.

I've wondered about the mod issue as well. After I installed the 1.12 patch and downloaded the 1.12 server, I tried running a lan game and kept getting booted for having modified data. I now know that most of the full mods like Mercs (and just downloaded PR, haven't played it yet ) are supposed to be punkbuster safe, but I also use a bot changer and a mapsize changer because I pretty much only play single player. I like the idea of playing online but it just seems so chaotic (in an unorganized way). Getting picked off as soon as you spawn just doesn't seem fun to me.

But, I'd love to be able to play the mods on LAN. I have no idea why I wasn't able to connect to my own LAN, and even don't do that very often, but love the mods way too much to trade them for the occasional lan. Thought of duel installation but the registries will still be there.
