    Attack chopper tips needed...

    hi

I am trying to pilot the attack choppers without crashing them right after the take off...

well, I am little better now, but I can't land on a helipad and hover!!!
actually I can, but the way I am doing it now (reducing totally the he speed) is too slow and in a real game situtation I would be shot...

    any ideas?

    thx

Heres a tip forget that chopper and get on the jets! If you want to be king of the skies thats the way to go.

But if you insist... simply let go of your accelerate but remember to pitch backwards that should slow you down exceptionally. After slowing down use your pitch forward/back keys to get it level. When hovering get your heli absoloutely level and tap your accelerate key, don't hold it. By pressing it in burst mode you should be fine.

I am sure loads of people will post here something similar or very different. Thats how I do it, but I usually now fly jets more than anything :)

If you are using a joystick make sure you have a seperate key for accelerate and deccelerate and not to use the Throttle lever. By doing this you will continuously have speed. Although you can push the lever down it won't be done soon enough and it is extremely difficult to control your speed this way. Trust me I did this and it failed.

      sounds stupid but practice

get on a sp map and practice like mad

cut the speed right down while hovering, you'll still take off fast enough in a game situation

      good luck, ben

if your joystick has a throttle, set it so that it keeps you at a steady hover.
(This varies per helo, but is usually around 30%, as indicated by the bar on the left side of your HUD). When you first hop in, start w/ the throttle lever at zero, and keep moving it up SLOWLY until you see the thing just barely move... at that point you should be pretty balanced... then I just use the W/S keys when need - to accellerate/decellerate

Here's a tip: don't use the mouse to fly.

              Joystick > Mouse

To avoid crashes and if ur using a mouse make the sensitivity high, recommend using a joystick

                i will get right into the fact;

if after about 5hours since youve start practicing, your stil not able to for example land at 1meter close your chopper in the center of a landing strip... i recommend you just to not try to pilot theses things/beuties anymore...

you are maybe taking it bad but some people dont have the potential of understanding the physic and the aerodynamic features of a chopper when its in motion. you have it or not... its as simple as that. no need for theoric lesson.

if you dont have a joystick, buy yourself a good one,(if you can) and maybe youll get a chance to make it...

otherwise its a loss of time...
if after 5hours you feel good, all i have to say is practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice until you can beat the average pilot or more(depending on you motivation).

I find the a,w,s,d, and arrow keys to be sufficient for flying choppers...

yep i know... got this game for a week now.
but just don't use the mouse only up/down a/s and left/right for corrections or to give your gunners a chance fire it up at a target.

first few times i almost got sea-sick by loosing feeling of directions, i learned to press 'c' twice, to see what's realy happening and correct the helicopter before crash...if possible. Now I know that's wack, but helped me to learn, don't need it anymore, and is useless when you want to fire...

                    still learning

just keep trying, eventually youll learn to compensate and become better, i was the same way.

                        thanks guys...

I tried to pilot the chopper twice...
the first time I fought another chopper. thanks to the horrible pilot (me) and an equally bad gunner, we lost, but I hit him
the second time I survided some time but a humvee eventually shot us down

i am still practising, and oh, I don't have a joystick

oh, I almost forgot... I can't hit anything with the TV missile! Is it me or that missile will only hit what is in the small square (hud)? If I try to hit anything out of that square the missile won't hit!

the worst is; if I use the camera view I can barely see anything...

                          Practice is everything.

I came into BF2 wanting to specialize in flying the AH-1Z but failed the first few times. Eventually I got a hang of the helicopter and even found some useful techniques through trial and error.

actully i disagree mouse is better if you cant use a jstick like me only thing better about jstick is you get a better turn radious while flying but if you are a good pilot you can evade a good pilot. I cant use jsticks they are to awkward for me due to some handicaps i have so i have learned to fly both heli and plane with the keyboard and mouse. As long as I hva ea good co-pilot flying along side of me he can easly save my keester when im in trouble.

Copters will hover by themselves, long as you're not already wildly out of control, i.e inverted, etc.

Throttle percentage to maintain altitude while in a hover is around 19%.

If you're just learning how to fly the copters, I suggest you don't do it on the expansion maps. I don't know if I'm just used to the regular bf2 copters, but flying the Hind is a pain in the rear. The longbow is not too bad, but still rougher than the basic attack copters.

Both the hind and the longbow seem to like to roll really easy---and keep on rolling until you end up pancaking a tree or a building. The hind also has a really weird center of gravity and the cockpit position with respect to the main rotor is completely different from any other copter in the game.

Most important thing starting out is do not overcompensate. The Hind is especially unforgiving of this, with the longbow a close second. Cobras almost fly themselves compared to those two, lol.
