Not hard...(this is how its done in max.)

    1. Highlight the wall/model you want to cut...

    2. select mesh/edit

    3. in the toolbar choose edit faces. (its easier if you move vert's to either side of the width you want for the door...)

    4. hold the alt key down, and (drag your mouse/while pressing left mouse key) over the entire place you want the door to be.

5.( you should have the door faces highlighted now in red...) choose extrude on the tool bar, and move it slightly forward or back creating the door facing.

    6. now you should delete the selected faces, creating a hole for your door.

    BEST TO BE SAFE...
create a save after each step so you can go back and redo a step, if you mess up.

If you need more help, let me know, and Ill make a tut with screenshots as I go.....

thats assuming you already have a poly that represents the area of the door, or some verts to move into possition.

If not, select the wall poly and use the "slice plane" tool to cut out the shape of the door. The extrude (...intrude) the doorway...then for simplicity use that extrusion to create the interior.

** dont be tempted to use booleans

also when i use the slice plane it just slice's the hole wall and not just the door i want to put in

No you dont want the slice plane, use the ""cut"" tool to the right of the slice plane button....

Then extrude, and either use the extruded surface to build your rooms inside, or delete the surface to create your doorway...

you dont think slice plane is easier? since its perpendicular with the angle snap? ...and just easier.

plus the cut thing jumps all over the place.

                  Re: question about modeling

I dont like the slice plane that well, it is messy...(places verts in all sorts of odd places...)

practice with the cutting tool...takes some getting used to, but the results are well worth the time and effort of getting to know the cutting tool.

The cutting tool conects at lines in your model, using the cutting tool, make two lines from the bottom of your wall to the top....(space them on either side of your door)

Now you can make a cut between the two created lines, one at the top of the door, and one at the bottom...

I will make a cutting tool tut later today, and demonstrate how to cut square, and even round holes using the cutting tool.....

Ill post a link when its done...

I find the cut tool far more unstable.

To make a door like that, the plane would be far better.

                      1. You can easily slice two perfectly verticle lines
                      2. Select the resulting poly and use the slice to cut two perfectly horizontal lines through that poly only.

The cut tool tends to do what it thinks you want whereas the slice is precise.
