how far will gmax get me

i'm new to modding and mapping and i downloaded gmax with the tutorials and i'm wondering how far will this software get me in the modding world? i don't have the money for 3DS Max so i need to make the best of this as i can.

also, any advice for a new modder would be greatly appreciated.

It wont get you the Bells and wistles but it will get you the bike .

Meaning that it is just very basic, Modeling Part is there but it doesnt have all the fancy stuff that makes stuff much easier.

Theres alot of other 3d model maker around , but i dont think any of them come close to gmax (im not really sure)

yes unwrapping in gmax can get tedious... but essentially with the mod tools you cant go wrong with gmax for free bf2 modding!!! and its a good launchpad for 3dsmax in the future...

Ultimate Unwrap3D Is a nice uvmapper, and has plugins for almost any game you want to mod...

also works for importing/exporting between 3D model programs...

Its not free, but its low cost, and well worth the money...

WHat other modeling programs can u use for bf2.
Cause there is also
Blender3d a very powerful freeware software.
Maya7 PLE a unlimited free trail of maya, has watermark
The XSI 4.2 mod tool
And I think you can purchase the newest 3dsmax for like 180,- if your a student, and as far as I know a lot of others have cheap student versions to.

i've read that the PLE version of Maya doesn't work with BF2 Editor?
