    Minimum to run high.

Ok with my system I cant run on all high settings..it freezes up every 2 seconds.
I even bought the game fear today and couldnt run it on high.

Ok Ill be honest, Im not a computer tech expert, but I love my computer and I love gaming, so Im coming to you guys to help me out with some advice and such.

My system, from what i can figure is thus..
Dell 8400 (dont laugh it was a gift, free comp even if its a Low quality dell is better then not free )
    my sytem propertise says..
    Pentium 4 CPU 3.20 Ghz.
    3.19Ghz 512 RAM
And Im pretty sure my graphics Card is a GeForce 6800.

So what changes do I have to do to be able to play all my games on high settings? Is it just more RAM you think? I heard you guys say alot that 2gig is needed..so that means I have a 1/4 of whats needed
SO if I go out and but more memory will my problem be solved you think? And roughly how much will this cost me, cause it might just be what i get myself for Christmas if it isnt that bad.
Any other recommendations would be helpful to to help my better my gaming system and overall Experience.

your CPU and Videocard are fine, but you need to get atleast 1GB of ram, 2GB is what you want for all hight though.

dell puts 6800 in their computers now? or did you buy it? good 2gb RAM would cost you around $250

          Re: Minimum to run high.

Yes I think it is the vanilla, when i go to my nvidia settings it says 6800 not 6800 GT..if thats the better one.
Yeah my girlfriend wanted to buy me a new comp this last May, she didnt have cash but she said she woudl finace it fo rme, so we went on the Dell Web site and I picked the parts, I had to stay under 1500 tho, but thats what I got.
I knwo I coudl have got better by havign it custom built, but I didnt have the cash nor knew how to go about that process. With my 512 tho i can play BF@ in low settings 100% lag free, so Im not missing out on gameplay, just fooled around with settings and had them on high..OMFG!! its a completly different game on high!.

So rougly 250 to up to 2gig, hmmm..I guess since its a Dell id have to buy it directly from them? I do have another 300 dollar limit on purchases on her Dell account for Christmas..soo...maybe Santa will deliver some RAM

Thanks for the info guys, keep it coming, I wanna do what ever I can with what i got to work with.

no you don't have to buy it from Dell and if it's the vanilla version I don't think you could run it on ALL high with no lag but it will still look good.

Actually in the new XPS 600 they put dual 7800 GTX's. And i have a vanilla 6800 that runs with 50 bots on all high with 45-75fps. No lag at all except for a little bit of loading lag at the begining for like 5 seconds. However my computer was made for gaming, it is also a Dell. Was thee top of the line when i got it almost a year ago, funny how its almost a year old and it still runs the newest games on the highest setting. Y'know what you need? Download Aquamark 3 or 3D mark05 and it will tell you whats wrong with your comp. I recommend downloading 3dMark05 at futuremark.com

I know for a fact that you do not have to buy it from dell. I work for dell technical support, so you might as well get the information from the horses mouth. The only thing dell will ever make you do for third party hardware is pull it out of the system if we believe that its a problem. So lets say you get memory beeps when you boot the system up one morning, if you call us up, and we find out our ram is not in there, we'll just ask you to pull your new ram and stick in what origionaly came with it.

Oh and btw, dont buy from dell.com, you'll just waste your money. Although I did buy a dell myself simply because they offered me their EPP. THey give me an interest free loan of up to $3500, which gets deducted off of my paycheck over 1 year until its payed off.

                    Re: Minimum to run high.

what resolution are you considering "high"? are you using a lcd or crt? these are things i need to know as people consider high resolution different based on their display, but in case you don't get back to me quick, i would say the min you would need to run 1280x1024 or 1600x1200 and all high settings would be 2GB of ram and a 7800gtx(if you have the pci-e version). you need to find out if you have the agp version or pci-e version and if you are running ddr or ddr2.

if you are running the agp version you are going to be maxed out at either a 6800ultra picked up used or a ati x850xtpe, again i would pick one up used.

                      Re: Minimum to run high.

I would just try and figure out what type of ram you have, If you cant call dell they will tell you, and get the same kind(doesnt have to be the same brand). I would use a price comparison site like pricegrabber or shopzilla. I bought 2 gig about 3 months ago for about 200 dollars. I saved a ton of money by comparing prices. Also you need to look inside of your computer and see if you have room (open slots) for the ram. You arent gonna believe the difference the ram makes.....Red

                        Re: Minimum to run high.

All on High is something like:

                        AMD 3500+
                        2GB RAM
                        6800Ultra or above

Ofcourse you can run high on any system, but something like this will be required to have a descent (40 - 60 at least) FPS.

                            Re: Minimum to run high.

I think you have to take into account if you are going to have 4xaa and 8x AF and what res you need becuase you LCD/CRT monitor may not do 1600+ res.

1280 with 4xAA and 8x AF look good even on a 32" monitor and then a 3000+ CPU and 6800GT will do fine. I run in 1024 or 1280 on a widescreen 32" LCD, battlefield wont run at native 1368 HD widescreen res (which is annoying) buts I have a naff CPU running at 1024 is fine with AA.

Lots of people seem to buy a stonking GPC then run on a naff 17" LCD monitor. And decent 28-32" LCD's cost less than CPUS.

I'm possibly going to go for a 7800 GT SLI soon, but not sure if I might go for a 7800 GTX 512 single card. Waiting to see more posts about which is faster I'm still to be convinced SLI is not a pain in the arse most of the time.

yep with 2gb of ram and the cpu and graphics card you already have you should be able to run bf2 confortably at 1280x1024 all on high settings with 4x AA
