    True Skill

I was originally going to post this in reply on that thread about blazin.uk - the best player, but figured this deserved it's own space.

Everybody wants to talk about points and nerds and bunny-jumpin and tking and how-can-he-play-for-8-hours-a-day-he-must-have-no-job and medics don't count and this and that jibble-jabble.

This is a game, #1 - so STFU - YOU ARE NOT IN A U.N. Security Council Meeting!!!

#2 - This game(BF2) is about modern warfare and IN PARTICULAR - squads.

If you cannot play with a squad, consider yourself a second-class citizen, A BF1942, old-style warrior - no matter how many points you have.

True Skill is something they haven't found a way to measure. True skill is about LEADING squads.

You can look up my account, It won't really matter, I have 6. It will tell you nothing. If you play with me, you will see the light and you might choose to follow.

I can consistently score 50+ points per game playing anything, armor, infantry, helo, jet. It firkin bores me.

When I am squad leader, however, I consistently score 0 points. yes 0. Maybe that partially explains why I don't have 50 million points or whatever you "hotshots" have.

But my squads seem to be top squad about 80% of the time and we PWN.

I live to see my boys kicking ass. If my team can win because of my squad, and I got zero points and zero everything else because of it - that is what matters in life, son.

Or as Conan once said, "to defeat your enemy on the battlefield, to see him driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of the women."

    Re: True Skill

So you're saying that true skill can be measured by hiding in a dark corner somewhere near a control point so your squad can spawn on you?

Also, random cone of fire, squad switching, bunny hopping, and grenade launching took most of the skill out of the game. It looks more like quake or UT now than "modern warfare".

Wow, that was a nice post explaining how good you are. Insecurity, perhaps?

I think the game-statistics ruins your 0 point best player tactics, but yes, it is much more entertaining to play with a well organised squad, with micropones.

I don't see why you are getting 0 - that seems pretty damn lame. You should in the least be staying back for the spawns - but you should be a point for which your squad can get some heals, or ammo at least. Or if you prefer to stay far back - snipe for crying out loud. Make the enemy try to hide from you, or flush them in to your squad.

              Re: True Skill

Its true, the way BF2 is set up the squad leader should hang back a little and allow his squad to spawn off him but you can be a medic or support to get some points and when the flag is white you could get some assists. Sometimes you have to kill something? But overall its true, the squadleader probably should not be the highest scoring player on a squad.

                Re: True Skill

I always thought the the squad leader should get a point his members get a flag (and he dosen't ie: he wouldn't ever get double)

It would allows SL to hang back a bit and still get some points. Being SL is a hard job, and for the most part has very little advantages to the individual.

So I guess they found a way to measure it after all.

                  -------------------

Here's the problem with these skill discussions - no one can agree on the scale of "skill". Is it task by task, shot by shot, game by game? Is skill an aggregate measure that we apply to someone's performance and impact on a battle from start to finish? Or is it something granular that we apply to every single bullet someone fires, every action they take. Or both? Neither?

Someone nail that down and then we'll talk about ways to measure it.

                    lol you suck eh?

I play squad leader 90% of the time. I'm almost always 1st place on pubs with my squad mates below me. I don't play like a wimp hiding so my squad mates can spawn on me cause I don't need to. I'm good enough not to die so frequently that is causes a problem.

Quit crying cause you suck and trying to make yourself feel better. 50+ points each round isn't really good either. ESPECIALLY on SF maps.

You live to see your boys kicking ass cause you can't do it yourself loser.

True skill is when you play lone wolf and can take out entire squads.

Amen to that, although if he's getting 0 points per round and still playing, he must be doing it for fun.

I think the point of the original posting shows how it is possible to have fun in a variety of ways in this game.

Personally I don't like being the squad leader that often as it means I have to stop running around shooting people and start actually thinking... Don't get me wrong, being the SL of a sqaud that is spawning on you while you cap flags and kick ass is fantastic. But when I want a quick blast for 30mins it is too much work...

Still even when I play for a blast I still join a squad when I can...

True dat. But look at my stats and I play in squads all the time and am the lead 90% of the time and still rack up a lot of points. You don't have to hang back. I am usually the best in my squad, not trying to brag or anything, but from my experience, if the squad leader goes in and gives his squad direction, they will secede better than a squad who's leader hides somewhere. That hiding makes you more vulnerable IMO, because they will find out where your men are coming from most times.

I keep moving with my men, and if they see someone charging for the flag, it is likely they will follow instead of wait back, be cautious, and then get shot while standing around. If you stay on the move instead of hide, you are more likely to be successful since the enemy won't know what is going on. My stratigy is to hit them hard the first time and if we don't all get on the flag and take it at the same time, then just forget and start over again.

Once you show up at the flag and the enemy encounters you, you might as well be ready for a big fight if you don't make it the first time because they will most likely get help or you will be spotted by the whole bunch.

I agree with the true skills are not always visible in the stats, but I never got the squad leader stay back thing. You are suppose to be leading your men, and if you stay back and hide, what kind of example is that. When this happens, I usually see them move in cautiously or in a sloppy way because they have no direction.
But this is just the way I lead my squad and people may have luck the other way, but if you are a good squad leader, that doesn't mean you shouldn't get points. You should and there are ways to do so easily.
