    Why no naval combat?

I'm sure this has been brought up before and discussed to death but I can't find a good post about it (or I'm just not digging deep enough).

Why didn't EA add any Naval maps into Battlefield2? Some of the maps in Battlefield 1942 had battleships and subs, I admit that sometimes they weren't that well used but they still were fun. BF2 has nothing but an aircraft carrier, no cruisers, subs or frigates. Why not?

Are the weapon systems to difficult to make for the gamge?

I don't think so, the cruise missle could easly be done like the helicopter gunner missle camera.

There aren't enough real stats on the Chinese or MEC naval units?

Well the Chinese are known to have some of the same naval vessels, Russian build. MEC doesn't but the MEC doesn't actually exists so make some up from Russian ship designs.

The only real reason I can come up with is game balance. The truth is, weapons like cruise missles could easly change the balance of some maps but the battleships could have done that in BF 1942 but no one really used them to there full potential.

I for one would like to see some more naval maps and naval units, at least they would allow the air combat role to work it's magic on more then just tanks and air combat!

    Re: Why no naval combat?

Because belly buttons make for very small maps.
    :p

Naw, seriously, I suspect it has more to do with problems involved in large movable objects. BF42 never really resolved the issues that induced mega-lag while standing on a moving boat. With BF2's ramped up graphics and detail, the problem is worse. If you want to test the current state of mobile object physics, stand on a tank while it's driving around. It's NOT acceptable.

This isn't to say that Dice should be bashed for it. It's a really big problem that no-one in the indusrty has been able to solve in any practical mannor. Even HL2 had some issues with you just being able to stand on movable objects and it's got the best physics going. And that was in SINGLE PLAYER!

Would be nice to see it return, but don't hold your breath.

Edit: If you think that technical data or lack there-of bares any factor in what is impemented or how it's implemented, you've got yourself some very strange delusions. :p
BF2 is an ACTION SHOOTER losely based on real world elements.
    IT IS NOT A SIM!!!

But look at Joint Ops. You can stand on ANY vehicle without actually being connected to it and you wouldnt move, and this is the same case on servers with 100+ players. Im sure Dice could have done something like this. If not oh well I still would love navel battles lag or not. I can live with a little suttering.

Because |^|gort would **** everybody off by killing everyone on the opposing team at will. (BF1942 reference there.)

Actually, I would think that it has more to do with the fact that there really hasn't been any naval combat in modern warfare. We use our subs to spy and carry nukes, and we use aircraft carriers to server as mobile airfields.

There really hasn't been a lot of "shelling the beaches" going on since WWII.

Do you know of any mods that plan on this feature?

I'm following Shattered Faith most of all and it's not really real world so...

It "could" have been done, but apparently the moving object problem was too much to bother wasting there time on, for what would probably be a small part of the game.

There is easy classes, maybe make a submarine, a anti-sub frigate, Carrier, something like an Aegis ship, and maybe a missile cruiser.

That could be one way, make it so that the object is controlled by only one person but I guess this is still a large object.

Can you move the Aircraft Carrier like in BF1942? I've never really tried.

Yeah, I never got to play it much, but I never thought it caused much lag. (talking about moving the carrier in 1942). Can't move it in BF2 though.

I think the main problem was that the game was killing anyone standing on something moving. Like stand on tank it moves = you dead. Imagine spawing on the carrier, someone moves it, and the team dies.

                        Re: Why no naval combat?

BF2 makers put just enough effort into this game to take the max amount of money.

Their equation looks something like this: EFFORT per minute/MONEY per dolar= QUALITY OF GAME.

The makers dont seem to have a zealous attatude towards the game, but more of a most money/least work idealism.

Actually thats just a vehicle setting, setting the right setting to 0 prevents the whole killing person thing :P

That it would be fun to have on clean sweep or the gulf. Would be cool if you could sink the essex and then all the marines have to spawn underwater and repair the essex or drown in ten seconds. I can see it now, bunch of engineers swimming around trying to fix that thing. :/

Now only if that was realistic.
