Quick Online Server Question

Sorry if this has been answered,

Whenever I first join a server it is insanely choppy for a few minutes before becoming nice and smooth. Im just wondering if this is normal?

My specs:

AMD X2 3800+
Asus 7800GTX TOP
1 GB Ram
DSL connection

You need to have 2GB of RAM, BF2 uses approx 1.5 GB of RAM. Also I don't see a sound card listed, if that is true, you need to use lower sound settings as well.
