    Laser guided missiles

I've been looking but can't find anything specifically about my problem. When I fly as a gunner in the two seater jets, some days I tear it up and other days I can't get a lock-on for anything. I know it may be due to different pilots, but usually there is a certain amount of time that you expect to get a lock-on. And sometimes it just doesn't happen.

I guess my question is: do the different aircraft have different lock-on times? Without a lock, it's very hard to hit anything. I hate to look like a noob to my pilot so I'm just trying to see if I can do something different.

It has a little to do with the pilot, but it's really not as much as you may think, if he's going to bomb something, your missiles are faster. My main tip is always keep the camera pointed at the nose, and never stray far away from it. Also spot stuff, maybe your pilot will listen. Keep your eye on the minimap so you don't get TKs those missiles will devistate anything in the area.

Hmmm....never thought about TKs from those missiles. Could explain a couple odd rounds I had with some minus points. Lol.

My regular gunner (who is also my roommate) knows all about his stuff is occupied at the moment... But his quick answer is NO, lock on times don't differ...
From a pilot-perspective: it's not where you fly, it's HOW you fly that gives the gunner kills... It could be (NOTE that I'm not an experienced gunner) that there's either too many enemies there for you to lock onto one or that there's friendlies there...
Not useful I know, but still...

Douwe21 (my roommate and gunner) says: Check your mini-map and hit when you feel like hitting... Don't wait for the lock if you are sure that it's an enemy...

Yeah, but if it's not locked, it doesn't seem to be as accurate. The missiles just fly all over the place. If it's locked, they pretty much home on the target. And if I see a circle, is that possibly a friendly or just an enemy. I've only been a plane gunner a few times so I'm a little fuzzy on everything. It just seems some days it's very easy and others it's a pain.

Yeah, even if it's not locked and you have your recticle on the target it's still a simple kill because you have plenty of time to guide it down to the target.

The problems that plague the laser guided ones are the same problems that the anti-aircraft have. Same sort of principle, there's an invisible object added to all ground vehicles that show up on your radar (that's what you're hud picks up) and your HUD allows you to lock onto those. The misslies have their own set of code as well, allowing them to lock on their own, determining the agility of the missile, the angle it can lock at, etc. The problem could be lag, it could be bad coding, another target becomes closer to you than the target you're looking at and is still in the lock angle of the missile, plenty of things screw with these missiles.

If it's not locked, it will go wherever you have the '+' mark. I've had many copilots hit jets as I'm coming up on their tails just by guiding it in with the '+'.

The problem is that your pilot will pull the nose up at the end of a bombing run and pull your marker up at the same time, causing the missile to pull up too. (Pre-1.03 the camera was independant of the nose to avoid this. It had some bad side-effects though. Now, I like the way it tracks with the plane more than having easier no-lock guidance.) It's kinda hard to move the + 'down' to keep it on target as the plane pulls up or dodges around.

I've had problems where it says it has a lock, but it won't hit the target. After the F15 was downed, then respawned, it suddenly worked again.

I've also seen the missile go straight for a tank, and at the last second veer off to hit an empty AA position 100 yards away. Very wierd.

                    Re: Laser guided missiles

I have problems with the missiles being inconsistent from round to round. Some rounds, I can lock on, fire a missile, and it will hit the target everytime. Other rounds, I can lock on, fire a missile, and watch it go nowhere near the locked on target and hit a friendly vehicle instead.

It doesn't just go off course and hit some random location; it always hits a friendly vehicle, just as though it were locked on to it. When this is happening, it seems to last the entire round. I dunno what it is.

I can play three rounds in a row on the same server, with the same pilot, and my score will vary wildly. I think that there is a bug in the game with this system.

Dang, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I know this is a noob question, but it never occurred to me to try guiding those missiles. Can you? I guess you can guide all of the other missiles in the game but for some reason I never tried it with the laser missiles.

Tell the pilot to slow the jet down a bit. You'll see that you will get more locks. Then when you pass the targets speed up the jet to avoid any enemy fire back.

Well I’m always a co-pilot either in the attack chopper or in the bomber, and I am finding it harder to turn the missiles since the patch. It seems that the missile runs straight for a given amount of time before I can turn it now, and by that time its gone past my target... Pain in the @ss if you ask me.
