Advance warning: Fed up of complaints? Don't like rants? I suggest you hit the back button.
Well, it's been about 3 and a half days since I got SF now. And I have to say, I'm disgusted.
Vanilla BF2: A game of wonders. I started playing it in single player, only having the chance to play MP later on. I had tons of fun offline, and never came across any real problems. But when I started playing MP, it was even better! Wow, I can play on huge maps against all these people? Cool! I had fun...for a while. Then all the bugs started hitting me...poor hit detection, objects failing to collide, lag, red name bugs, poor AA (which, by the way, works so much better offline...). I was irritated sometimes, especially when I have a ping of about 15...you don't expect lag to be a problem on a high bandwidth, low-ping connection... but I enjoyed the good times enough to keep playing.
But patch after patch came, and the problems remained unfixed. The server browser remained a pile of glitchy rubbish. One patch even needed patching for a memory leak! Great QA job there, guys. But I played on, choosing to ignore the bugs, to bear with it and deal with it. And I had fun, when the game wasn't being exploited by losers, when it wasn't acting up, breaking, and so on.
So I got Special Forces. Hey, new maps, guns, more stuff to play around with...cool. And surely they'll finally fix some of the issues with the game after all this time?
...no.
I think I finally see what many people have been going on about...not only were no problems fixed, but a huge, mind-boggling number of problems were introduced.
-I now get slowdown in singleplayer in SF. Never happened in BF2. All it takes is more than two bots on screen to kill the framerate, and I've turned my graphics settings DOWN going from BF2 to SF. 'System Requirements will stay the same' they said. My PC is clearly above the minium and yet I can't get an acceptable level of play offline with 15 bots?
-Lag problems even worse online, even on good servers + I have a low ping, etc, etc. Problems with slowdown, collision, lag are much worse in SF than I ever had in BF2.
-Installing SF made my original BF2 stop working. I can't play on BF2 servers now. 'modified content'. Great job once again.
-Iron Gator: great idea, poor execution. A level made out of a static object and then stuffed full of other static objects, players and action? Oh my goodness, why ever would this run slow on anyone's PC?
Not to mention it should be renamed "MEC slaughterfest", since I've never seen the MEC take a single flag on that map (I have to say I got plently of easy kills as the US, sitting in the boat bay...)
-My controls online in SF keep spazzing-I'll be walking along and suddenly, I'll be looking straight up at the sky. Or it'll stop responding to input for 1-2 seconds. Reaaaal useful. Again, this never happens in BF2 to me.
I could go on, but I think I'm already going to be flamed for complaining as it is. :p Yes, I know I'm being a whiny git...
Is it really too much to expect an expansion pack that just adds a few new maps and guns to not mess up the game so much more? Is it too much to ask that I can get acceptable frame rates on all low graphics with 1024x768 res? Hey, here's a comparision:
min req:
1.7GHz processor
512mb ram
128mb graphics card (lowest Radeon that is supported is the 8500)
I have:
2.5GHz processor
768mb ram
128mb 9800 PRO - far better than an 8500...
I'm not even borderline: I clearly exceed the requirements in every way. And I was happy with BF2's performance! Generally fine! But now they sell me a game that they tell me I can play, but can't? Thanks a lot!
What really set me off was going through servers just now trying to get a decent game in. I just kept dying and being an idiot: running into walls and jerking around all over the place, due to my 3 FPS or so. And then I quit the game to find my peak memory use is 1200mb (!!!!). Sure, EA. The requirements are just the same as BF2's.....
And then I find out that another expansion is coming out in march. March.
I could take the BF2 problems. But now, added to SF's problems, and the news that they'll be making another expansion instead of fixing all these problems...well, it's the straw that broke the camel's back.
Well, I'm glad to finally get all that out of my system. I apologise to all the people who said about the problems the game has, how we shouldn't buy SF...and now there are more problems. Sigh.
I got my money's worth out of BF2 with 150 hours of play...a shame I've only have about 5 hours of SF before I'm just simply too fed up to carry on.
Let the "tl;dr"s commence! :p Not to mention the "just buy a better computer"s.
