Another crash topic - sorry

I've recently built a new pc and i'll be damned if I can get BF2 to run on it.

Specs:

GeForce 7800GT
Athlon 64 3500+
1Gb GeIL Value PC3200 RAM
MSI K8N Neo4 Mainboard
Onboad AC'97 sound (I know, I know)

BF2 gets to 47% on the loading screen then crashes to the desktop with no error message. On the few occasions it does manage to breach 47% the system freezes at 62% and requires a hard reboot.

I'm completely out of ideas as to what could be causing it. I've got the latest mainboard and gpu drivers. I have the latest motherboard bios. I've checked each stick of RAM to make sure none were faulty. I've tried Windows XP with and without SP2. I've also tried completely reinstalling windows.

Any help at all would be really appreciated. My dxdiag file is apparantly too large to upload, so i'll have to find somewhere else for that.

Is BF2 the only game you have a problem with?

I don't seem to be having trouble with anything else, no. Quake IV, Splinter Cell 3 and Half Life 2 all work without flaw.

Ok, that problem seemed to sort itself out in the end, but now I have yet another one.

I've just installed an audigy 4 to replace my onboard AC97. Very nice soundcard. CoD 2 sounds wonderfull with it. However...

BF2 now freezes and the speakers emit a high pitched squealing noise when I go into the options menu. I've got the latest drivers, it's all installed correctly...once more i'm at a loss.

Ideas?

I really don't know what to say, it seems like you know what you're doing with respect to driver updates and such.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again, you'll have to chalk these problems towards DICE/EAs shoddy code. This game is a disaster. But so fun when you actually get it to work. Everyday I wish this game was made by a more competant developer.

As trivial and insignificant as shadows and clipping are, they continue to remain botched and prevalent (even after a series of patches). If this is the current state of things, how can we expect them to get the more demanding things right?

I know I went off on a tangent there, but you really shouldnt be experiecing a problem with your setup, but alas, you are...and I can't offer you any advice to rectify the matter.

I agree. It's an absolute train wreck of a game. Unfortunately, like you said, it's just so damn fun when it works. I'd have binned a lesser game by now.

A reinstall stopped the game crashing at the option menu. Unfortunately the crash now occurs at 15% on the loading screen.

I'm going out on a limb here, but maybe you have a bad pressing of the disc. Have you verified that the game installs properly on a different setup?

It worked OK before I bought a new PC. Upgrading seems to have had the opposite effect to what I had hoped for.

I assumed I'd botched something while putting it together, but I have absolutely no trouble at all with any other games.

Ok, I'm gonna go out on another limb (running out of limbs here), but try putting your memory sticks into different dimms, if that doesnt work, try running them out of dual channel mode. I know this sounds stupid, that's because it is, but computers are stupid too, and sometimes doing things which defy any logical reasoning to support them work.

After overclocking my systems, each one required it's own measure of stupidity to get working properly.

I am suggesting you do this, because it seems to be a memory issue, the loading part strictily involves memory, and hard drive, and seeing as your hard drive is functioning properly, the only thing that can be going screwy is your memory.

Did you get any further or was it the same?

Do you have fast writes enabled? If you do, turn it off.

Delete all files in the cache folder just in case, and let the game reoptimise, it's in the BF2 folder, in my documents.

Set your graphics card options to detect game settings. For example, dont set Anti Aliasing to 4X AA in the control panel. Just leave it at game preference.

Make sure you are using the latest graphics drivers, if you are an it still fails, then maybe try rolling back to earlier drivers.

Try those, and see what happens. Tell me if you get any further in the load.

I uninstalled and reinstalled every driver on my system and I can get the game to run at default settings.

I now get a crash when trying to increase the video settings. I'm going around in circles.
