  • Official EA fix for "patch failed" error @ 1.12

I had the problem where I installed 1.12 and got the "patch failed" error afterwards. Then I couyldnt even start up regular BF2 ....it would go to a black screen, then to desktop. I emailed EA....they sent me the below text, I followed it verbatum and it worked. Youll notice that a few of my DirectX files were out of date. I had to reinstall 9.0c twice for it to take effect. You can check yours by going to run...type in Dxdiag, click on directxfiles and it will tell you if you have problems.

Thank you for contacting us here at Electronic Arts Technical Support. I’m sorry for the difficulty that you are having with Battlefield 2.

Please try cleaning out your Temporary directory. Do not delete the folder itself, open the folder, select all of the contents, and then delete them. Often you will get an error that some of these files can't be deleted. This is usually because they are currently in use, so first let's end any program that would be using these temporary files.

    • Hold down the Ctrl, Alt, and Delete keys at the same time
    • Click the "Processes" tab.
    • Click on the gray bar in the middle column that says User Name to sort by user name.
    • Do NOT select anything for SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE, or NETWORK SERVICE.
    • Click on anything besides EXPLORER and TASKMGR for this User Name or other user names.
    • Click on END PROCESS
    • Repeat these steps until only explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe are open for this user profile.

Note that some applications may take multiple times before closing. Don't worry that you are permanently changing your system configuration; these applications will return when you restart your system. Once this step has been completed, please proceed to the steps below.

    • Double click on "My Computer"
    • Double click on the C: drive
    • Double click on the "Windows" folder.
    • Double click on the "Temp" folder.
    • Hold the "CTRL" key and tap the "A" key to select all.
    • Tap the "Delete" key on your keyboard and accept the "Are you sure you want to delete these files" prompt.

You may also try to lower a Hardware Sound Acceleration setting on your computer to "basic". To do this, follow these steps:

    • Click the Start button in the bottom left hand corner of your Desktop.
    • Click on "Run".
    • Erase any text already in the run prompt.
    • Type in: dxdiag
    • Click the OK button.
    • Select the sound tab at the top of the tool.
    • Set the Hardware Sound Acceleration Slider to "Basic".
    • Click "Exit" in the bottom right hand corner.

You may also try contacting Microsoft to ensure that you have the latest version of Direct X installed on your PC.

"DirectX Files Tab: Several files (ddraw.dll, d3d8.dll, d3dim700.dll) are old versions, which could cause problems. You should reinstall DirectX to get the latest version."

Please try performing a complete uninstall of the game. You can manually uninstall the game by removing the files and registry keys associated with it. Be sure to follow these steps exactly as they appear to prevent accidental file/program deletion on your system.

    To delete the save files:

    Open My Documents.
Right-click on the Battlefield 2 folder and choose Delete.

To delete the game files (in the default location):

    Open My Computer.
    Open the C drive.
    Open the Program Files folder.
    Open the EA GAMES folder.
Right-click on the Battlefield 2 folder and choose Delete.
    Close all open windows.
Right-click on the Recycle Bin and choose Empty Recycle Bin.

To edit the registry and remove Battlefield 2:

    Click on the Start button.
    Click on Run.
Type regedit in the text field.
Click File and then choose Export.
Name the file Backup and make sure the Export Range is set to All.
Click Save; you will now be returned to the Registry Editor window.
Click the plus sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Click the plus sign next to Software.
Click the plus sign next to DICE.
Right-click on the Battlefield 2 folder and choose Delete.
Click the plus sign next to Electronic Arts.
Right-click and choose Delete on any Battlefield 2 folders.
Click the plus sign next to Microsoft.
Click the plus sign next to Windows.
Click the plus sign next to CurrentVersion.
Click the plus sign next to Uninstall.
Right-click on the key named {04858915-9F49-4B2A-AED4-DC49A7DE6A7B} andchoose Delete.
A Confirm Key Delete window will appear, choose Yes.
    Close the WindowsRegistry Editor.

Battlefield 2 is now completely removed from your system. You may create a new Administrator account and choose to reinstall your game under that account. Then, you may proceed with downloading patch 1.12 from the official website:
