my sound crashes

my sound crashes mid game!!!
i will be playing then all of a sudden i have no sound.
everything else runs fine does anyone know what could be causing this?

3.0ghz P4
ati radeon x800 256mb
2GB ram
onboard sound hardware on ASUS p4p800 E Deluxe has ALC850 audio codec with 8 channel audio

it used to work fine on this till just today it stopped working

i have an old school sound blaster that i could use should i try and use that instead of onboard?

A clanmate had the same problem, and it moved onto CS:S too, loosing sound mid-game, or even sooner...

He also had an ASUS board with on-board sound. Once he upgraded the chipset drivers and the sound drivers the problem went away....make sure your drivers are up-to-date.

i just installed a crative labs sound card and seems to be working fine now
but if problem pops up again ill be sure to do what u said
