    BF2 Graphics Settings (+AA & AF)

    Hey,

I've been having some trouble lately getting BF2 to run smoothly with the settings I want.

    My system:
    A64 3200+ @ 2,6Ghz
    2GB RAM
    Ati X800XT PCIE
    SB Audigy 1

I'd expect to be able to run BF2 with everything on high +4AA but for some reason it doesn't want to keep high FPS rates. Dips down into the 20s in some firefights and that's very annoying. Otherwise it's around 60.

I have all settings on high, 1280x960, 4xAA, EAX and Hardware sound on.
AF and AA are disabled in the graphics driver (Cat 5.11). VSync is off.
Windows XP is cleaned up, nothing excessive is running in the background.

Anyone have any tips, am I expecting too much of my system (I don't think so ) ?
Would be good if people with similar systems (especially graphics card) could post which settings they run at.

I think you are trying to push your card a little too much, remember some people are only getting these graphics with a 7800GT/GS, so try and take off the AA or atleast reduce it to 2x, just fiddle around with some of the setting, then see which ones make the largest impace upon game play and reduse thoe by one. Or you could try and OC your vid card, you should havnt to do it much and its quite easy to do. If you are unsure about OC'ing there are alot of threads around showing/telling how it can and should be done. Just remember though, that if you do OC it make sure you go in small increments. Other than that, there isnt really anythign you can do, you have 2 gigs of RAM, btw what speed is the RAM and how many MB is your vid card 128 or 256?

RAM is overclocked to 216Mhz at the moment.
The X800XT has 256MB of RAM.

The thing is when I was putting this machine together back in July or so from what I read it seemed like it would handle BF2 at these settings. And now it's looking like the card won't do it Kind of depressing.

I can try overclocking the card but I don't think it would have much effect.
That's why a comparison with a similar system would be helpful, to see if my expectations are off the mark.

Yea, i know what you mean, but OC'ing can greatly increase your cards performance, as with my 9550 256 Mb card, i am playing with most of the setting on medium, as it has been OC'ed (when i play BF2 i OC more than what is in my sig). But if you want to do s search you will find alot of threads that have the specs and the settings that poeple have, and alot will have similar systems to you. But be mindfull, all systems are differtent, even if the hardware is the same type. They all perform slightly differnently. You might also want to check your Virtual memory, and make sure you have at least 5% of HD space left, preferably 10%, (if you are using partions) and on your windows partion i would suggest 2-3 gigs free.

          Yeah, I'll try it.

What do you guys recommend: using AA ingame or turning it off ingame and using the drivers to force it?

the drivers are controlling the AA and AF, try to turn things down a few notches, i use to get 30-40 fps having everything on high, 8X AA and 16AF, turned the AA to 4X and i got around 50-80 fps (im using 7800 GTX)

Turn Dynamic Lights and Shadows down to medium.

Anti-Analising and.. umm.. i forgot the other one. Basically it makjes everything look smoother by blending the pixels at the edge of objects together, as far as i know anyway.

Well you can do it either in game, when you are changing the video setting, say in BF2 there is an option for AA, and you can say off or 2x, 4x, 8x.. etc.. or in your video card colrtroller.. right click on your desktop and click properties, go to settings the advanced.. then browse through that.. and it should be there somewhere, under one of the tabe... but its different for every card and brand.

I cant find that AA setting in bf2, can you tell me where it is?

The reason I am looking to change this is becasue I was told it might fix this problem

OK.. umm.. under; options, video, then half way down there should "Anti-analising" or "AA" or "AF" or "Anistropic Filtering" i cant remeber which one it is, that is what you change. Btw, im going well in ur sig :)
