New Unlocks in BF2 Vanilla

How do the unlocks work for normal BF2? You install SF and play it, then a few new weapons are available in normal bf2?

Do you have to earn a rank to unlock them or are they automatically available to you?

Assuming you've ranked up some already in BF2 to unlock some of the default unlocks, you will then play in SF for a few minutes and then quit. You will then be informed you have a new unlock(s) to pick (from inside SF). Those are available only because you've ranked up already in BF2. Any subsequent unlocks you need to rank up for. The unlocks are for BF2 and not SF but you have to play some in SF to 'activate' them.
