1st of all Marine should be capitalized.
2ndly ALL ROCKET LAUNCHERS HAVE BACKBLAST, NOT JUST RPG's
I was a Marine Infantryman in the early to mid 90's. I fired the RPG-7, the AT-4 the LAAW, The SMAW and a DRAGON. ALL ROCKET MISSLE LAUNCHERS HAVE BACKBLAST. And it is not the bacblast like in Red Dawn, the RPGS move like bottle rockets, IRL firing a rocket launcher is abrupt and violent. Especially the SMAW ( http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/smaw.htm ). When you fire it , it sucks all the spit out of your mouth and all the snot out of your sinuses. You are only allowed to fire 3 a day during peace time. One day I fired 10, I gess that is why I am losing my hearing in my right ear.
Before you fire a rocket launcher you always yell twice "BACKBLAST AREA CLEAR! BACKBLASTAREA CLEAR!" AS you look over your shoulder to make sure!

rpg's are a "recoiles" type of rocket launcher
instead of ones that fire and have recoil the rpg blast jets out the end
thus spewing shrapnel up to 50 meters behind them

Taken from some sas book ive got:

Own goals with an RPG-7 include an IRA terrorist driving in his van with an RPG-7 by his side. He spotted a british APC and decided to take a shot at it. Stopping his van at a convenient gap in a hedge, he opened his window, put the rpg on his shoulder and took aim. Lining up a perfect shot he fired the rocket. A split second later the van exploded into a huge fireball. The APC was unscathed. A subsequent investigation revealed that the terrorist had been transporting around 150kg's of homemade explosives in the van that had been ignited by the backblast of the rpg.

RPG's don't shoot out shrapnel, they shoot out a .... rocket! that then explodes.

He's talking about shrapnel that comes out of the back of the RPG itself.

The second movie posted was of a man firing a Recoiless field piece from his shoulder. That isnt the proper way to operate the piece. So im not surprised he got knocked on his ass.

All direct fire rocket launchers have backblast that CAN kill you. not all are like that. the javelin uses a soft based launched to avoid potentially dangerous outcomes. someone said the RPG7 doesnt fire completely after trigger pull. it does.!!

I found the video originally off of a SF website and they said the guy didn't have the switch on, so that's why he got screwed.
