    Special Forces Reviews

Many BF2 players including myself have not yet bought BF2: SF and would appreciate reading reviews from those that are busy playing it. There are a number of short messages in other threads like "yeah, I like it" but it would be nice to read mature, detailed reviews please. Please post reviews here including whether you recommend buying it. Thanks.

Should be out in a day or two... recon they need to play some online first. (they sure are slow though)

      Re: Special Forces Reviews

A few of the maps just plain suck.
Leviathan and Steel Gator are just plain retarded.
Steel Gator: EA complains about "stat padders" and builds a "stat padder paradise" I saw a guy with 212 points last night on a SG server. It is now my most reviled level, I will play Dalian plant before I paly that map again.
Leviathan: Too enormo! Too Dark! Too many doors! Nuff said.
The NVG action is gonna take some getting used to.
I LOVE the FN SCAR-H, it is the death machine. And they must have fixed the SAW, because I am in love again. The MP7 is alot more useful than a Shotgun.
All of the Brit Weapons rule.
      Playing as the Chechyns rocks.
The new 6x6x6 is pretty tight
The BMP-3: Can o' death (for the driver)
The Technical: "Technically" no different than the MEC Jeep (other than a little faster and less "bulletproof")
ATV: Fun til you get shot at. Drives up stairs, nice mobile C-4 platform
Humvee-T Variant? What to expect? It is a TOW. 1 Shot 1 Kill (that works both ways)
Insurgent RPG? Best addition to the game. Hands Down
Zip line: I watched a game last night and it looked like a casting call for Spiderman 3
Grappling hook:No rooftop unreachable (I wish I had this in Karkand)
      CS: ****es me off
      Flashbang: Also ****es me off

        Re: Special Forces Reviews

I love everything so far except:

Russians don't appear to have ANY new weapons. I got three unlocks but was only able to use them on one map because I kept spawning Russia (5 rounds).
Hind can't carry more then pilot and co-pilot
Medic doesn't appear to have anything new and that's my favorite class. =(

Other then that the game was well worth the $30. I'm starting to realize most people's opinions are loaded for one reason or another and I'm going to stop reading the opinion threads as much. It's almost like people have a chip on their shoulder or want to start the first bashing threads... well... just because.

        I would buy again!

            Re: Special Forces Reviews

I think they did a pretty good job with it all in all. Would have liked to see some new weapons for the MEC/Russian/insurgent based forces, but you can always kill someone and get their kit. Haven't played the RPG yet, but look forward to doing that.

I agree about the HIND - kind of miss the troop carrying aspect of it.

I'm pleased with the new maps -- contrary to the person above, I really liked Leviathan b/c of the mix of indoor and outdoor. I've always found the reaction to night maps interesting -- guys always want them, but no one really ends up liking them. I've always been fond of them myself.

I say 4 out of 5 stars -- a definite buy for the BF2 junkies out there.

I should have elaborated. I know they have new guns, I unlocked them. If I remember, there are two new medic unlocks..?

Anyway, I was refering to grappling hooks, zip-lines, etc. The frosting on the cake, if you will...

                My Review;

I got my BF2: Special Forces in yesterday. With this expansion pack I am totally amazed on the new features. Two types of Ropes: Grappling hook, and The Zipline. Two new Bangs: FlashBang and Tear Gas (well, not a bang). But it is really funny to watch people who do not have their masks on, and you can hear people coughing like crazy, like if they are doing pot or something the wrong way. I even encountered myself being silly trying to survive. Coughing away and trying to find the door, and you find yourself hitting walls. Putting on a mask after the gas ignited doesn't help, because you have been effected. Flashbangs can blind you to at night, even with out Night vision goggles. White screen of death. I encountered myself throwing a bang, and it blew right in my face (White Screen). Enemy got me, while I was trying to find my way around. Yeah, even hitting the walls to. Their are new vehicles of course. ATV (quad bike), Civilian Car, Pickup truck, Jet Ski, and other vehicles. No Aircrafts like a F18 or other jetfighter, only helis. I flew a attack heli, and I can feel the change in size (Bigger). More comfortable and stable to.

A aircraft carrier map can be tear gas heaven. This is where I found out how to use a gas mask after a tear gas was thrown, but before I put it on I was coughing like crazy, hitting walls, and hitting the edge of a door. Then I found out after about "Use the gas mask". You will encounter yourself running around with a mask on most of the time, and no one else. They look at you funny, and you can hear yourself breathing like "I am darth vadar". So, then you take yours off, because no one is wearing em. Then by surprise someone throws a tear gas can.

The aircraft carrier is totally huge, and many levels. You can actually get lost in it. So, many things. Even the Aircraft ramp moves up and down when you pull a switch. (Oh, other map has a elevator. "Missle laucher". Pull the leaver down, or up, and you will find your self going up, or down, or waiting for one.

So, while trying to find my way around in this aircraft carrier. I decided to stay at a flag. I realized I can see half way to the other end. These little dots moving around my screen are players. The graphics just amazing for what I can see from here I told myself. Their is a lot on this aircraft carrier. Huge!..

Maps with openning doors or other things, by pressing a button. Kewl stuff..

One thing I got to say is. BF2: Special Forces is more difficult to play. I noticed a change of play to online with 63 other players. Yeah, their is still that chaotic running around. But I have seen some pretty good squads at work last night (training I guess). I tried to be skillfull on one squad, but I dunno what in the world my squad mates are doing while they lead us all into a trap. So, I end up going lonewolf. Players in BF2:Special Forces have slowed down from the original BF2. They are more cautious.

But, new to the game? Their is no time to take in a scenery and in aw, on the graphics.."Ah, man..this place looks so kewl! Does this door open? Does this do anything?". Then poof!...your down. Realizing ..saying to myself "Oh...Yeah..their is no mercy here." Players do not know what your up to.

I say they did awesome on this expansion pack. I really like the Maps (I like huge maps, more room to play on and more decision making), and all else. I really enjoyed it last night. Could not stop playing. But their was a time last night my skills were dropping, that I had to call it a night.

that would be too unfair. if DICE gave them that, the medics would have basically EVERYTHING in the game!

I think you'll be best off waiting a couple of weeks until the "wow this new" factor wears off if you are looking for a real review.

Maybe it's just me, but it lags a lot when I play Warlord with a a64 3200+ and 6800oc, 1gb ram, all medium settings, 1680x1050 tho.

I guess you are right. It forces me to play other classes until all my clan get the game. After that, I'll just tag along and write the rope...

                            Re: Special Forces Reviews

I got my expansion pack last night. Unfortunately, I haven't had much time to play around with it so my review is limited. I promise this little intro is relevant: First, I'd like to say that yesterday was the first time that I finally got my computer optimized enough to play at full specs. My signature shows my setup along with current overclocking. I'm very new to the tech aspect of computers so it took me a little while to figure out how to overclock my proccessor without crashing my ram. Last night I got 25-45fps in a 64map single player with a bot mod set to 100 at full AI. (Console says max squad reached, setting to 140 bots however definately adds more. Not sure of actual count). Gameplay was seamless at the threshhold of framerates with occassional stutters every couple minutes perhaps.

After installing the SF patch, I installed the expansion mod and then 1.12. Granted, I used a patch found on a forum here that had a 600kbps transfer rate. Took 8 minutes instead of 3 hours (I have cable). I virus checked it and file size checked it... seemed legit. And probably is, but I am experiencing a few... glitches?

                            1) If you have other mods installed (Merc, BotChanger, 64map in single player), you'll need to delete the extracted files/use the uninstallers then delete the folders. I say this based on my own experience only. I found that SF "overwrote" or "changed" things enough to make them stop functioning. Reinstalling fixed most problems. Still have some to look into.

                            2) I have experienced SEVERAL Shader Optimizations in vanilla BF2 and SF. Same maps, same sizes, close game go back in and reoptimizes. Turns 15 second load into 15 minutes.

                            3) Graphics/sounds missing in some load screens now. After reinstalling 64map mod, loading screen shows 16 (used to display properly).

For anyone who is unfamilliar: Special Forces is a modification to Battlefield 2. It is not a sequal game. If you check the shortcut target you'll see what I mean. This means that vanilla files HAVE been altered. So you will notice some changes to BF2.

I'm not sure if my patch went wrong or if other people are experiencing these problems. I am definatley not complaining. I'm learning as I go along, and consider any problems/quirks/bugs to be IBK issues; not hardware/software. I plan to uninstall all patches, BF2 and SF, reinstall with just the SF patch and see how things look. If everything looks "fixed" then I'll download the official patch from EA.com and see what happens. I'll repost with an update (or save me the trouble if you've already done this and it worked/failed!)

                              Re: Special Forces Reviews

I received my copy yesterday. (and the cheesy 'free' t-shirt from EBWorld) I just love the expansion. If it was anymore than $30, maybe not, but I feel I got my moneys' worth.

I like Ghost Town alot for a favorite map. Seems like you can just keep going rooftop to rooftop and then use the zip line to get down. So much fun. The new maps seem to lend themsleves to teamwork a bit more than BF2. Iron Gator is kind of nutty cause there's always someone shooting at you it seems. I also like Leviathon.

Some of the maps get some crazy lag going when artillery is htting etc.

The install is a bit clunky and I still don't understand why there was a patch immediately after the release of SF.
