Solution for Patching Failed with New Patch 1.12

Yeah so ive been a long long time lurker, anyways i got the patch today, and it gave me the same old error (patching failed) and well the old method doesnt appear to work, because well PATCH.RTP is missing.

So basically, start the install of the patch, then when you get to the install button do the following:

1. Go to start run type %temp%
2. Look in folders that have a name like {438372-2.....
3. You should see some files called Patch.exe, and some other things. Copy them all to a temporary directory lets say C:\Patch
4. Go to start->find and go to advanced options and choose search hidden folders and system folders
5. Search for PATCH.RTP it WILL BE ABOUT 275 MB'S!!!!!!!!
6. Copy Patch.rtp to your same directory as the other files
7. Go to start->run type cmd
8. go to your patch folder in command prompt
9. Type patch.exe "YOUR DIRECTORY GOES HERE"
put where battlefield 2 is, for example i would type: Patch.exe "D:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\"
10. let it run.

Anyways i hope this helps, it worked fine for me. its just something i wanted to share with you guys. If its already posted then sorry.

Thanks. Going to give this a shot as I've widdled my windows drive down as far as it can go. Last chance without reinstalling windows (reconfiguring partitions) to get this patch to work. Only patch(es) I've ever had to hassle with this. Don't know what's up with these guys .... think they would have got it right the 3rd time around (another thread I suppose /me tries to keep calm :)).

I kind of deleted those files along with the other temp files when I was trying to make room for the 3 gig requirement.

Seeing as threw away the instruction manual and without the CD-key I can't reinstall, I guess I'm just going to give up EA for good.

....and I was looking forward to Special Forces too....

bye28.tmp
isp.2c.tmp
iss.tmp
(file) ISpackfiles.ini

I was able to find a patch.rtp in there but no patch.exe and each of the directories seem to be a copy of the next. The number behind bye* may be different depending which attempt you're on. At least as far as I can see. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Not totally hip to what's going on.

Do a search for patch.exe Make sure to enable search in hidden directories and system directories.

Did you copy all the temp files AND THE patch file into the same directory? If not it doesnt work.

You can get your CD-Key back you know. Its in your registry. Search the forum and I'm sure you'll find the location.

ur cd key might be encrypted in the registry so go to system restore back to like a while ago (when you installed 1.02) or something like that and then look there

I'm having the same problem as fungi, I can't find any patch.exe file. The closest thing I can find is a setup.exe file. Could you post some screen shots of what your files look like?

Nemo and Fungi Do you see an alphanumeric folder in your %temp% with all the bf2 patch files?
If you do then thats where patch.exe should be.
if you dont then you need to run the actual patch file you downloaded from ea, select the language and click next and dont click "ok" when the error comes. Then you go into your %temp% and open the alphanumeric folder.

I got the patch to install, but now whenever I try to run the game the screen goes black and crashes back to my desktop. Anyone figured out how to fix that?

I am having this same problem.

Uninstalled my BF2 and reinstalled it. Then finally got the patch to install the round about way.

But now the game just crashes to desktop before I can log in.

Argh!

I found this solution on the EA Games forums, thanks to phildaant for finding it.

It is advised that you create backup of system registry before proceeding.

Run regedit

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\Curr entVersion

Do not expand CurrentVersion node, just highlight it.
Find ProgramFilesDir variable in the window on the right side of the screen.
It will point to your program files directory (usually "C:\Program Files").
Change that path to folder on a drive that has enough space to patch BF2. Close regedit (this will save changes) and run the patch. After the patching is finished open regedit again and restore the previous value to the ProgramFilesDir (don't forget to do it - your system may become unstable if you won't).

This worked for me. I hope it will help at least some of you too.

i tried to patch it using this way, but when i go into cmd, then go to the folder with the patch.exe in it then type patch.exe and my directory, it says could not find patch file. the patch file however is clearly there. i also did copy all the files that were in the temp files along with the patch.exe
