        Re: Renders

Clay renders are lit environments. I just think its missleading. I mean why not post pictures of models with 100 000 polys and procedural textures...cos theyre not gonna be used in the game.

After saying all that stuff about making details visible etc etc...ironically noone mentioned this...that I was actually lying - you can use "clay renders" in any game.

Ok that statement makes absolutely no sense. Please explain further.

            Re: Renders

which one? About the clay renders?

Well strictly you cant do those in real time. Ambient occlusion takes AGES. Though there are a few things in development to make it happen in real time, so maybe on next gen consoles...who knows.

            Now however, its impossible.

            BUT

Anyone who knows even the basics of skinning should know you can bake textures...right?

So, once youve skinned the model, bake it to texture without any lighting.

Then remove that skin and replace it with a mid grey material with no specularity (or anything else for that matter)...then turn on ambient occlusion. Then bake that to another texture.

Take the two textures into photoshop and put them together. Assuming you didnt change the model or anything, the two textures should fit together. Set the blending mode to screen (or maybe multiply...or actually whatever you like).

Then use this as the new skin. TIP...the skylights are best when theyre coloured (usually blue or purple or even orange - whatever colour the scenes syy is likely to be).

Think they used a similar process in BF2 proper..

You can do all that within Max, but if you use photoshop you have alot more control over everything.

PS you could even go nuts and add a bump map to the model when you do the clay-render-to-texture. This will add lots of extra detail.

              Re: Renders

Yes, but bumpmaps dont show in a clay render since the light comes from everywhere (exept if you have brazil and turn eneble bumpmaps on)
But a very interesting theory I'll check it out.

Btw: did you make this thread to refer to this post or this it occur to you on the way?

                Re: Renders

So youve gone from hating clay renders with a passion to wanting to add them in game. Right now Ive heard it all, apart from a story about a depressed goldfish.

                  Re: Renders

That because a goldfish has a 5 second memory.
I think he started this thread to tell us one can "bring" clayrenders ingame.

Well then use an image in the skylight (preferably hdr), that should make the Bmap visible - or you could do a third render with just the bump map and a directional light - do i have to think of everything???

Was curious to see how modders would respond...and wondering how versed mod-modellers are with max.

has it ever been proven that goldfish have a 5 second memory? im sure its just an old wives tale.

rofl mythbusters - must be false then

i forgot tht mythbusters is the pinnacle of unbiased, controlled, scientific study lol

                          - a fishes ability to obtain food is a rudimentary instinct -

                          - adding parameters to its feeding cycle is called - conditioning NOT memory

                          - as much as one could argue either way it has been fundementally agreed tht there is no sure fire way to test the ACTUAL memory of a goldfish.... but i think it typical that "mythbusters" would claim tht it could :)

there are big names on either side of this debate but i dont think it belongs in this forum.... but i think i can safely say mythbusters (at its heart) is for entertainment value - making science appealing to the layman.... but certainly not something i would quote

You could use a similar system to render lightmaps for outdoor scenes.
