Whats with this trend of plastering ambient occlusion renders all over the place of models that are intended for mods (which in many cases wont see the light of day) - but certainly wont look anything like they do in the renders.

if Dice did that everyone would winje because they would look nothing like that in the game.

Its called clay renders and its because textures havent been created and because they want to show off their models and because they arent DICE.

alright seeing as someone brought it up - how do you make a clay render... is it a setting in render section of 3ds? cheers

The way I do it is I set a light above the model(forget the name of the light, spotlight maybe), and then set it to light tracer(pressing 9 in max to set it). Then just render it.

yeah dagnamit thts what i want lol!!!! did you make all your objects white or does it just come out tht way....

its called the skylight, click on it, and open the materials editor and set the colour u want (too white will make everything too bright)
and u sould have something like this:

anyways, lets face it, a model with no skins is not pretty, so putting on clay renders help "beautify" the model without learning skinning

'Clay renders' have always been the best way to show off an unskinned model. Not only does it show a lot of detail that's lost in other rendering methods, it also highlights any errors with the model that otherwise would go unnoticed.

I don't quite see what your objection to them is...

It misleading for the people looking at the mod and also for the people making the mod...why view it in a way that is impossible to render in realtime.

Seems like very few 'mods' get past this hype stage...its like a weird advertising campain where people show these images, designed to cause a wow factor and drum up support. Then peolpe say "wow that mod looks cool". Like i said...if it was Dice doing that...everyone would kick off.

Just 3DS Max can do very good ambient occlusion with 3 mouse clicks.

We used clay renders since the dawn of bf42. Read Cdr's post, the clayrenders preview much more than a normal render.
And of course it doesnt look like that ingame since ingame your hopefully going to have textures.
And alot of mods use clayrenders that are already out. Its not just starting mods.

But I think your point rather is that its easy to make models look nice with clayrenders and are easy to modell so "mods" are poping out of the earth like mushrooms.

Its obvious that you've never been on a mod team and all mods which exist are trying to release something. Saying that half of them dont release doesnt really show why you hate clay renders. Clay renders are to show something, when you're on a mod you need to show people that you're still around and kicking and by showing nothing you cant say look our mod is going to rock so join and help us. When choosing a mod to follow people will more likely follow a mod that shows off clay renders than a mod that has a bit of text saying "will give you pictures when we've done the textures." Another thing, why are you comparing mods to DICE. Mod's dont have an army of game developers sitting in front of computers from 9am till 5pm beavering away at the same thing. Most mods are developed in people's spare time so everything takes a few days longer tha they could do. If you want to know why clay renders are used, as someone pointed out they show up mesh errors much better than any other render and they also show every detail of a model. If you use a lit scene you lose some detail through shadows and with textures you can lose even more detail where dark areas can mask small details. And finally, the reason hardly any model does a rendered light scence for a model is because it will look different in game. 3D modelling programs have very accurate lighting engines which do all sorts of fancy stuff and produce very realistic looking results. BF2 however has to try and do as much of this as possible in realtime so obviously a model may not look as good in game as it does in a render. Forgotten Hope is probably a prime example of this, no offence to them because they are some of the best modders out there, but if they ported everything from FH 0.7 straight into BF2, it would look amazing just because the lighting engine is completely different from BF42. Anyway Ive gone off on a tangent now and Ive made my post rediculously long but unfortunately clay renders good, you wont get rid of them so finish.

I prefer a bit of toon shading myself. It gives you a very quick and colourful representation of your work before heading for UV mapping.

heheh can u imagine a mod using tht for a release lol... the noobs would have a field day....
