Used to be good..now lagging so bad it's unplayable!

Used to play with just the occasional lag spikes, then had to reformat HD. re-installed the usual stuff, updated drivers, and re-installed BF2 w/ patch03. Lagging so bad now I can't play and at my wits end!

I have all the same equipment as before, why would I lag so bad now? I check my in-game ping and it's alway's in the 30-60 range but I'm stuttering and jerking so bad it's impossible to play. It's like my video card memory just gets full or something and can't shuffle the data fast enough? But hey, it's a decent card and worked great before the reformat. Isn't there some setting to adjust so the video card can use some ram for virtual memory?

I've changed monitors, using both LCD and CRT with no difference.

I'm going from the pole, through the cable modem, through a router feeding three PC's. I have bypassed the router and plugged from the modem straight into my PC but the lag was still terrible. I'm pretty sure it's my machine.

    Any help greatly appreciated!

Have you updated your chipset drivers and network drivers??

Try setting your AGP Aperture Size in BIOS to either 64, 128 or 256 experiment and see if it changes any thing.

Try using PCI Latency Tool to set your gfx card video card to 64.
    Download and instructions at:

Do you have a firewall installed, and is it configured? Have you enabled or disabled XP SP2's built-in firewall? If you use 3rd party firewall or router firewall there should be no need for it to be enabled.

If you have an onboard nforce LAN adapter, try going Network Connections and right-click the LAN connection select Properties and next to the green icon with the lan adapter, click configure, and go to advanced find Optimize For and select Throughput instead of CPU, maybe it makes a difference. Probably more when there's intensive traffic on the network.

If you have a fast second harddrive, where Windows ins't installed on, place your pagefile here. That can often increase performance.

Wow, everytime i read one of these threads it's always Nvidia 6XXX series cards. i've had the same problems recently, what drivers were you using before the reformat, i've used a few different ones and generally they've gotten worse the newer the drivers are. All i can suggest is to try modded drivers, i'm using 81.94 v2's with good results. It's either that or wait for Nvidia to realise a lot of it's customers are playing bf2 and fix the peformance issues!

Or just roll back your drivers to the 78.XX

78.11 were awesome drivers for me.
I just updated to the 81.94 XtremeG drivers and it's even smoother now.

Re: Used to be good..now lagging so bad it's unplayable!

Hello all, I'm still fighting the lag monster.

Drunken Pirate...I'm using the 81.94 drivers from the nvidia site...are these the same as the xtremeG drivers you are using?

Boxious...I don't know what drivers I was using before the reformat. I tried installing somw randomly picked earlier drivers but had no luck there either.

As I type I'm downloading some modded drivers 82.04 from Guru3D site. Willreport on them shortly.

Gunny Highway...have changed my PCI settings to 64 in the bios. Could not find anything about AGP aperture size but there was an entry that my AGP overclock = 66 mhz. SP2 firewall is disabled. I'm supposed to have an nforce lan adapter but it does not show up in network connections, maybe because I'm connecting through an ADMtek USB to fast ethernet converter. I only have the one HD, a Maxtor 120GB SATA.

I played in single player mode just before coming in here and everything ran smooth as silk so I guess my problem is related to the transfer of data on the internet. I'm going to download AmericasArmy and play that online and see how that goes.

Thanks again for all the responses....

HOOAH! Life is good again! I'm able to play...still with some lag at times but that may be server lag. Don't know what the cure was, changed a few things...but I'm guessing the new 82.04 drivers I installed helped.

                  Thanks for all the feedback..:)
