I posted WHY I thought the UAV sucked.. I just didnt say 'IT SUX'..
However, your reply is no surprise around here.. its the typical brown

To those people who say 'BF2 isnt supposed to be real..'

thats funny.. because, all the weps, aircraft, vehicles, skins, and maps
are based on actual items.. but yet, make fun of something like the g@y
UAV and people start balkin 'omg its not supposed to be real, dude!' BS.

I guess EA/DICE just HAPPENED to ACCIDENTALLY make the other 99%
of the game based on realistic items ?

Man, some of you posters here in the totalbf2 forum are just down right
    morons.

If you like the UAV... fine..but dont tell me the game wasnt supposed to
be realism based. You just make yourself look stupid.

OMG! Like Global Hawks and Predators like totally have Infra-Red Sensors, so they can like totally see warm/hot objects through walls and underground! Like isn't that so totally awesome?!!

Yeah, why don't you give DiCE some credit for doing it's homework before you start blasting them ass-hole. Just because your way of playing is totally obliterated because of a decent enemy Commander does not give you the right to bi-tch about the overall game structure.

FYI : Those "little rockets" somebody stated eariler, which I had already mentioned before hand but nobody in this Forum SEEMS to READ anything past the Thread Topic and then post their own little piece of Digital Trash. Are actually the AGM-114 Hellfire Missiles that you see on the AH-1W Super Cobra, the Predator can carry 2 of them or the Global Hawk can carry 4 or 2 AGM-64G Mavericks

So i thought it would be great if u could see it and shoot it down!also they said the apatchie(spelling :s)helo fully armed can take down up to 14 tanks and a killing range of 5 miles like WOW:p
1st:first an UAV needs a link to give it orders... so the destroyable UAV building on the Battlefield 2 ground is realistic.
if there is no UAV ground comand...then UAV is offline.

2nd: 10,000 feet is way too low for an unmanned spy plane... boeing 747-500 usually fly at 37,000 feet high!

so a UAV should be around 60,000 or 75,000 feet...i dont remember.

3rd i agree with the unreallistic range of the fired tanks shell, but remember that BF2 is a mid-realistic game as EA/dice said.
before Americas Army, and after unreal tournament.

This is the IGNAT. It is a UAV fitted with missiles, most likely TV-guided Mavericks

          This is the Predator

I actually applied to be a design engineer on these projects back in 2004. The company is General Atomics, but the division is Aeronautical Systems out of Rancho Bernardo, CA.

Yeah, but I didn't get the job because there was a waiting list! Nonetheless, I still have contacts in the defense industry, so I might try again in a year or two. First, I'd rather get my Masters in Mechanical Engineering, then maybe my Professional Engineer license.

*sigh* Frickin high school reuinion will come around before then, though...

Re: UAV not real in BF2

I had posted this in another forum on a different board but it seems that it may apply here as well so I will repost it.

Well, as a former 96U (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Operator) in the Army for 3 years, I have a little knowledge of the UAV's capabilities and whatnot so I will give a little feedback...

                1) The UAV is controlled from a "shelter" IRL. This shelter is a HMMWV with an air conditioned box on the back. In the shelter there is a pilots seat as well as a camera operators seat.

                2) The only ones able to see the images on the screen are, obviously, the ones in the shelter and whatever battlefield commanders are being piped the video feed.

                3) The UAV (at least the one I flew) has a range of 200km. This allowed for the operators to be well away from the danger. Although the GIGANTIC dish that we used to control the aircraft put off a similar radar signature as an enemy missile launcher and was very vulnerable to HARM missiles (Anti-radiation missiles).

                4) There was definitely downtime after each flight for maintenance and refueling.

                5) Shooting the plane down was a very VERY difficult thing to do. Most missions were flown at an altitude high enough so that small arms fire couldn't hit it. The shape of the plane and the propeller configuration made it almost impossible to track with a Stinger missile IRL due to it dissipating the exhaust and therefore making the heat signature almost nonexistant. Believe me, we had a truck with a Stinger tracking system on it try to lock on with the plane just flying a holding pattern less than a mile away and it could never lock on.

Given all of this info, I think that the UAV is a very viable asset to have in this game. However, I think that it should be used in place of the Sat scan. I think that the commander should be the one controlling the UAV itself and the info that he sees should be "piped" to the squad leaders only. This would promote teamwork and the members of a squad would be more apt to follow the squad leaders orders as he will have more accurate information than they do.

This is just my 2 cents. I am new to these forums and am about to install the mod to check it out. I saw this thread and thought that since I have quite a bit of experience in the UAV field IRL, that I may be able to shed a little light on the issue without committing any security violations of course.

If you have any further questions about the UAV's operation IRL, feel free to ask and I will give you as much info as I can without getting myself in trouble.

It shows which way the enemy is facing, even...and they are nearly
constant (if you have a decent commander that is......) the whole game.
Since when on any battlefield, anywhere does your entire side have
constant knowledge of where ALL the enemies are, even ones hiding
in buildings, under structures, and like I said, it even shows which way
                  they are facing.

Why even have a sniper class ? The whole point of a sniper is accuracy
and stealth.. THERE IS NO STEALTH IN BF2. Which is sad sad sad.

Combine this silly UAV with the ARTY and you got one silly @ss game.

They should have went ahead and gave everyone light sabres, and
jet packs if they were going to be g@y.

BF2 was ALMOST a awesome game.. But it turned into a pathetic
piece of unfinished crap, played by a multitude of goof offs and kiddies.
Too funny. And too true. Sadder still is that I'm playing the game anyway.

Lol. Yea, never said it was perfect...so one day if you walk outside your house and there is a UAV just sitting there in your drive way...chances are, the computer got the runway mixed up with your driveway, and landed on your driveway instead lol.

It was designed here in Australia in Womera(sa) where the space shuttle program is and sold to the US Army but im no expert but the way it works but i bet it cant pick everybody up like it does for real, and this is ment to be a first person shooter not arcade game!.

Also to the people who dont think the game should be as real as it could be.
I mean kiddies you can pull out your lightsaber but i want more realistic stuff!

If u dont like it load up your Startrek game:laugh:

Make that 80,000 and 114,000 respectively. Even the Concorde flies at 60,000 feet for example.

Oh boy, Rambo... yer definatly slipping.

The BF games were never intended as "sims". They are NOT realistic. They might look realistic and based on real things, but only loosly.

When you look at some of the other aspects of the game, the UAV is one of the less un-realistic things in there. I mean seriously:

Base jumping off a 2 story house

                          Medics with insta-reserection shock paddles

AT kit's that include more than 2 missiles (do you see the SIZE of those rockets??)

Unlimited and respawning troops and vehicles

Supply guys that pull infinent rounds of ammo outta their arse

Gun emplacements intentionally set up to NOT have optimal fields of fire

No fleet support for carriers (there should be atlest a battleship, some crusiers and a couple supply boats following the Essex around)

I could go on and on... but if you don't get my point by now, you aren't gonna :p

                          GAME not SIM!

Atleast the UAV has some realism to it.

I know less than u guys but 60000 ft is high a concorde goes that high because it was in a class ov its own with special pressure abitities close to jet cross space shuttle  i think 60000-65000 would be the limit ov a jet fighter only a handfull ov jets/rockets could top that and i think 100000+ ft is space dude.3 miles or 5 kms?is the atmosphere???not sure just trying to remember what i heard:)
