You should not be defragging on a daily basis unless your adding and removing large programs on a daily basis.

Defragging really hammers your hard disk you know and shortens its life so you should only do it when neccercary NOT daily.

again, anything FREE would be awesome.

          specs:

          amd athlon xp 2200+ (1.8ghz)
          1024mb ram
ati radeon 9600xt 256mb (running omega drivers 2.6.75a [catalyst 5.10a])
so should i buy a new graphics card first or add more memory?

i don't think i'll be upgrading my processor because if i do that, then, i might as well buy/build a new pc. right now, i'm thinking if buying a new graphics card and/or adding more RAM will give me better fps.

I'd say if you're going to buy stuff start off with the RAM. It'll make the biggest difference to your overall system, as well as letting you boost a few settings in BF2 without buying a new video card.

Did you try the AGP PCI Latency tweak? If so, I'd be interested to know how it turned out, and if you saw any difference in performance. It seems like your system should run the game pretty good if you just push it a little.

yes, it was already set to 64 since about two months ago. AGP aperture size to 256MB.

also, i have very very VERY few tasks running in the background... about 8 or so. i have stopped other programs running under services.msc

the weird thing is, i didn't have this problem when i was using win2k pro. but, i bought a new hard drive, installed winxp pro and i immediately noticed the difference (lag/jerkiness). it's funny because there are a lot less programs installed in my new OS, the registry is less messy, hard drive is less cluttered, hard drive not as fragmented, etc. and yet i'm having problems!

perhaps i should go back to win2k pro?

Re: how do i improve my fps?

Ok, sounds like you know your stuff pretty good. Far too few people know about the PCI latency stuff.

You've actually had luck setting the aperture to 256mb? When I tried that, my FPS became much worse. I put it back down to 128mb, and it ran smooth again.

I'd say go back to 2k Pro, myself. The ideal situation would be to have two HDDs, and have one as a game drive with your quickest OS, and a work drive (if you do any work) with your other stuff on there. I had a setup like this until the "Trios" drive selector I was using went out. Too bad... it worked great.

i'm going to try lowering it to 128mb. thanks for sharing your experience with the higher aperture size!

also, i *think* i know why i'm suddenly having problems - i think it's because of the catalyst 5.10 drivers. my fps was fairly smooth when i was using 5.9 on win2kpro. but, i changed hard drives and OS and installed 5.10. now, i'm going to download 5.11 and if i'm still getting fps below 20, i'll go back to
                    5.9.

but still, what do you guys think is more important - adding more ram or upgrading graphics card (with regards to my system)?

                    amd athlon xp 2200+ (1.8ghz)

Re: how do i improve my fps?

I just got the game myself, and there are a couple things that I noticed that can very adversly affect performance.

First of all, I already know I am clean of virus and spyware, as I just spent last week tweaking my system. I've also got the bare minimum startup items running start>run>msconfig.

You can also have a careful look in here, and disable any services you think you don't need, but be careful to note what you turn off:

                      start>run>Services.msc

Once that is done, check your video card settings from the windows control panel, not in the game yet. Make sure yuour Anti-Alias and Anisotropic settings are set to "Application Controlled".

If you do not do this, I suspect that the game will actually double the settings if you turn them on in game. It happened to me, and the game was completely unplayable at resolutions and quality settings that should have been fine for me. Let the game do these settings.

Next thing I found, is the game (by default) sets your sound to "software". I believe that even if you use integrated sound like AC97, that you should be able to change this to "hardware" controlled. /edit: I just read at tweakguides, that using software setting will actually reduce the load to the cpu, even if you have a dedicated soundcard.

For a system that should get reasonable framerates at medium settings/resolution, ie: xp3000+ and x800, it is probably the AA and AF settings in windows. If they are turned on, I'll bet my left nut that this is the problem.

Don't want to sound like a stuffy parent, but, that's nothing to be proud of.

Later in life, hopefully, you will look back on that with regret and shame.

                            Which is OK.

I did a few things like that back when I was in high school too. I can tell you that the only good thing that became of it was that I learned that my perception of pride was wrong, and changed my ways. The sooner you realize it, the sooner you can take pride in your own honesty and dignity.

No offence, just being open and honest, and hopefully helpful.
