Slowdown/Lag online and SP

I used to be able to run BF2 on my machine quite happily and did for a few months. since then i have moved house, got a new ISP and now both SP and MP play in BF2 runs horribly and i am at a bit of a loss!

I've not installed anything new really apart from the NTL broadband stuff and now my frame rate is down to about 15fps on low settings. before i could play on medium and yes it would slow every now and again but this was more ping based i think!

Now i know my hardware can play it fine as it was working fine before i moved but does anyone know of any programs/processes that will cause the slowdown i am experiencing now?

1GB Geil Ram (DDR400)
ATI 9600 (Vanilla timings - Omega Drivers)
40GB System Disk
80GB Data disk
PCChips MoBo (can't remember model number)

Do you use the correct connect software the NTL provides?
My mother had some prolems with BF42 with that.

I ran the basic setup disk that NTL gave me but i use the ethernet connection so haven't even installed drivers or anything! Or not to my knowledge anyway. So the connection is just a LAN connection, according to my computer. But how would that affect the single player side of the game? If it was just online then i would look at the modem etc and check that side but this just seems odd.

I've been off line for about a month as well so i've not been downloaing new progs or really installing stuff so thats why i am feeling quite stumped about the whole thing.

Just checked your sticky on what tech specs your after and i can supply all this when i get home (The joys of surfing the net at work!! )

Have you heard of anything that when installs causes issues with BF2? One thing i did do asap after getting my connection back was to update AntiVir so could that have had an effect?

might be connection problems, other things that can cause a major lag are

Spyway - suggest downloading Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta
Auto Windows Update - Turn it off
Wireless Connection - if your on wireless then people do go on ur connection and use ur precious bandwidth or connection to the modem might not be as strong.
NTL Software - check to see how much it is using the bandwidth and processing.

You on a router? or direct connection to teh modem?

Running AdAware with latest update but will run it again tonight to check again.

Always have Auto update on and haven't had problems before, plus the majority of that is all download not upload and seeing as i have a 3MB connection i doubt that MS could use that much bandwidth. I was DL a lot of updates when i reconnected but thats all done now and it's still affecting me.

No wireless connetcion used, modem connects directly to the computer but with proper WEP enabled wireless you don't get people piggy backing, you just need to config it properly!

Installed the bare minimum software so nothing there to use bandwidth.

Plus like Drunken Pirate said, none of this would affect Single Player mode!

Something to add to this now, logged on last night and was running well but it seems the longer i play, the more choppy it becomes. Turned all settings down to low from the medium they were running fine on before and i still get the same issues.

Seen other people talk about this but all related to dual core processors so no idea why this is happens with my single core!!!!

Any ideas anyone??

maybe it (case) got bumped around while you were moving.

Yeah this is proving to be a pain!

Don't think it banged or anything got rattled lose while i moved, had the case off several times as i have had to swap the RAM out to my friends Shuttle PC once or twice but it runs OK in that machine and everything else appears to be running fine, must admit i don't actually play too many other games anymore since i got this!

Think i'll try a purge of old progs, defrag and see if that helps anything... I'll keep you posted but any other ideas are more than welcome...

Well you were right, it was something small!!!!

Playing around last night i cleaned up my hard disk, removed loads of old stuff, defrag'd 4 times and still choppy... Then had a look in BF2 to see if i was missing anything and all the sound settings were up on high and EAX was enabled. disabled and turned sound down to medium and i've got my old frame rates back!!!!!

Didn't really consider my sound settings would have contributed to it to be honest, sound isn't exactly high up on my list of graphics problems but you learn something new every day!!

Anyway just thought some of you guys might find this useful if your having the same problems.

Yea EAX sux if you dont have the right hardware to support it :)
