    Freezing at higher resolutions

I recently upgraded from a 128mb 6600GT to a x800 XT and I am only able to run at 800x600@60hz, with low settings. If I turn up the Resoltion or Graphic level, BF2 locks up within 10seconds of spawning. I then get a Blank blue screen and Hard reboot. I have the same issue in SP as well as online.
Specs: 2.8ghz AMD socket 754 1.5 Gb Ram 450w generic PSU radeon x800xt
I am currently using the omega drivers, but I had the same issue using the catalyst drivers. I have uninstalled and reinstalled BF2. Deleted cache. I also used Driver Cleaner to try to get rid of my Nvdia drivers competely. I removed my sound card just in case.

I don;t think heat is causing the lock up because I am able to play for hours at 800x600 without any probs. My best guess is power, and I am borrowing a friends PSU tomorrow. Anyone have any suggestions??? thanks

    Re: Freezing at higher resolutions

So you have tried several versions of the drivers? also try the ATI catalyst drivers but without CCC , I had an x800pro and had some problems with the latest driver with CCC, installed the driver without CCC and everything worked fine then.

Also, don't know with res you want to use, but look up in the specvs of your vid card wich refreshrate the card can handle with certain resolutions.

For example when it says 50Hz on 1240*1024 , well be shure you pick 1240*1024 @ 50Hz and not 1240*1024 @ 60Hz, this will cause problems like you have.

Do you have the same problems in other games ??

the PSU could be the problem, but I don't think so, if your system pulls the game fine at 800*600, it will do the samne with higher settings, this will only use a very small amount of extra power, even when you are on the limit now, the system will become unstable, but not a direct crash , but you never know.

Hmm, All that I was going to suggest you have already covered. (driver versions, power, etc)
      I'm honestly stumped.
What monitor do you have? does it use a DVI connector or VGA?

          Re: Freezing at higher resolutions

I have only tried the 5.10 nd 5.11 drivers, I will try some older versions.

My monitor is a Samsung syncmaster 997df, /VGA. I don't think its the monitor as I was able to play at 1024 w/my 6600gt...Other games run fine at other res too. I am taking my rig to a friends today so we can test my card in is PC and vice versa.

I hven't had any probs with any other games either...
          thanks for the help

Okay, tried my buddies monitor and PSU today...Same issue. I was able to play for about 3 hour non stop at 800x600. As soon as we tried to up the graphics...bam..frozen. I also tried the 5.8 drivers (omega) and it locked up at low res too. Hard to figure

If you got the same problems in your friends computer then the card is most likely broken.

I dont think the card is broken because HL2 and Civ4 work fine at various settings. Has to be something in BF2

I will try updating monitr drivers next

                    Re: Freezing at higher resolutions

Well now I have updated my chipset drivers and my monitor driver, added a pci VGA fan, and held an exorcism and I am still having the same problem.

I also discovered that it is not only the resolution change, because if I up the graphic settings from low to medium, I get the same lock ups even if I keep the res at 800x600@60hz.

I think I'm gonna reinstall windows and start from scratch next.
