Black Screen Then Back To Desktop

I just bought Battlefield 2, installed the game with no problems. When i clicked on the desktop icon to start the game my screen went black, as it usually does when loading a game but then exited back to desktop. I didnt see the loading screen or any of the BF2 menu screens, all i saw was full black screen for no more than 2 seconds then my desktop. I also tried clicking on the multiplayer icon with the same result.

I did buy the game pre owned from Gamestation, the disc had no scratches and i never had an error message while installing. I upgraded my machine 4 weeks before buying the game, so i have correct hardware to run BF2. However i've been told my soundcard may not be suitable, i only thought it was graphics card, RAM and CPU that counted towards the game.

I have a C-Media sound card, which uses DirectX 9.0.C, Could this be the problem??

    System Specs :

    AMD Athlon XP 2800+
    2.09 GHz
    1.00 GB of RAM
    Nvidia 6600 GT (AGP)

Im using windows XP professional with service pack 1, i have had problems with SP2, Should i try to get SP2 working then try again?

Thank you for all your help

What driver version are you using?
What resolution and refresh rate is your monitor?

The driver i am using now is 67.66, I use this because when i use the latest driver 78.01 my system will not allow me to play video on computer. However i did put the latest driver on my computer reinstalled BF2 and got the same result.

My monitor is 60hz, and the resoltuion is 1024 - 768.

If anyone can has any thoughts as to why this is happening please reply.

Did you remember to uninstall older driver and rebooting before reinstalling new ones??

Maybe run drivercleaner to be sure they are gone, like mentioned here:

You should definately get SP2, the changes and feature enhancements to XP made by SP2 are so many that it almost is enough to call it a new OS.

It is best to Install Windows and then right after SP2, so you install it on top of a clean Windows install.
Alternatively make a slipstreamed XP SP2 CD so SP2 is integrated into Windows from birth, this saves a lot of time when installing.
