Command with Battle Coms = :D

This doesn't seem to have been brought up lately. I figure it's worth us chewin over a bit, so here goes...

How many of you actually use the command channel when playing? You know, that magical "V" default keybind? It's SO underused, yet powerful, that it makes me sad. :cry:

What brings this up for me is that during a couple sessions, I've been the commander and have been using voice to help improve communications. During one round, I was a little annoied that none of the SLs were talking back at all. Then it dawned on me...
"Ah, guys, you know that if you use the V key, you can talk back to me, right?"
This was followed by
"Holly crap! So THAT'S what that's for! Right on!"

That round turned into a thing of beauty. Three SLs started talking, giving me good field intel and listening to my commands very well. Better yet, they were now able to talk to eachother as well and co-ordinate their moves.

Since that one round, I've taken to calling for a SL check in when playing on a server where I know the voice coms are working.
"Role Call! If you can hear me, respond via the V key if you have a mic or hit Page up to acknowlage if ya don't!"
If people respond, I know I've got a team I can work with and it let's them know I'm serious about being a decent commander for 'em.

It's worth tryin.
I'll confess I sometimes feel a little geeky while doing this, but it's worth it when it comes together!

It's a good thing if it works, since talking to people and getting teamplay going makes BF2 such a more enjoyable game.

I'm really hesitant about using VoIP when commanding, since I generally get the feeling that people are just going to tell me to STFU and not want some guy telling them what to do over VoIP. I might bite the bullet and try it out sometime...

Good idea telling people what the key is too. I wouldn't be surprised if most people didn't know it was there.

Yeah, this is what got me worked up enough to make the thread. Win or lose, it's just a hella lot more fun playing this way.

The trick is not to just boss people around. Most of the time when I'm talking, it's to provide my guys with intel. "Watch it! Tanks rolling on "wherever"!", Tanker, watch it!! That's a spec opps guy behind you!!", "Guys, we need to break and cap points! Move out if ya can!", or "They're gonna hit "checkpoint name", dig in and smash 'em!"

So far, I've only had one person tell me to shutup, but they were quickly told to f:censored:k off by the rest of the team.

Never, ever assume that people know as much as you do. There's no harm in giving people info they already know, but there's a big bonus in educating those that don't.

Try to bring an interesting and directly game related topic to the table and no one wants to get in on it.

Seems like it's only the complaint threads that are getting any attention these days.

know what u mean. first time posting.due to all the rubbish. At last something sensible that makes sense.
Do wish people would play the game the way its meant to be.
They all complain but if you work as a tewam most of the problems with tanks and bunnies and helo just dont count anymore:laugh:

People don't realise that the team and command options are the best things in the game. With people in teams and a commander most of the problems are no longer problems. A team is always bettter than the loner. A loner will get wooped buy anything not so a team.

How very odd.
It's really seeming like people 'round here are less interested in the game and more interested in just bashing on it and/or eachother.

Ta try again, here's a simple question:
Have any of you heard your commander speak? Was it a positive thing? Do you try to speak to your troops?

I turned VOIP off; I use vent with my clanmates and it hugely reduces lag.

Actually, it doesn't.
Using Vent and BF2 causes more BW and system resource usage than if you were to just use BF2 with battlecoms.

I did a bunch of testing right after I picked up the game because I ain't got a whole lotta system to spare.

I know... it's shocking, eh? Dice's voice system is actually better than Vent! Well, not true. Sound quality is much lower and the way it's set up to adress makes it easier to deal with. Still, it's the best built in system I've seen to-date.

Besides, with vent you can't yap with yer commander or anyone else that you haven't pre-setup with.

Now that's very strange.
Also, it's too damned bad since your voice is one of the one's I'd like ta hear sometime. Rational posters are few and far between.

Anything particularly odd about it?

Remember, about 90% (pulled that figure outta me arse, but it's a high real number) of the servers that list as having battlecoms don't actually have it configured correctly.

The one sever that I'm sure has battlecoms working 100% is the Death Row clan server. Yeah, weak name, but a good crew to game with.

try to use voip all the time. Sometimes no one bothers to answer you. Best game so far by a mile... in squad all with mics. All talking to each other ans SQL talking to commander. felt good to play the game properly. You really felt for the squad and not the points.
Wish people would realise that they need to get into squads, it what really makes the game imo
