Just need to click on the 'Create New Channel' button (highlighted), to create the alpha layer.
As for seeing it in gmax, you wont see transparency by using the bundlemesh material no. By default, you wont see it in Max either (for testing purposes you can set up a seperate material, but using the bundlemesh shader you wont see any effects like that).
Fraid it's a case of exporting to the editor then playing about with the alpha channels until the transparency looks right (remember you dont need to export from Gmax every time you change the texture).
